Is it worth restoring an old knight

Hi all ,

Just like to ask if anyone knows if this chess set is worth anything, how old it could be and is it worth getting fixed or how to go about getting a replacement knight ,i got the chess set for free about 20 years ago as a gift and its been sitting around as the knight is in a bad way, from what i can tell its a lardy set but its a mix of two lardy sets put togetter the box it came in looks very old and is made of cardboard and steel ,any more info about it would be great i have also looked all over the web for a knight to replace the one that was eating but no joy in finding one over the last few year, the king is 3.75, thanks

I can see @Powderdigit putting a bit of wax on it, buffing it up and setting it up on one of his vintage boards and all of a sudden it becomes a charming set that I have to have.

No. It's a nice Lardy with these concave bishops, too. Playing it would be quite the memento mori. You'd have to find a substitute. I can't help but- what size is it?

If it was mine, I would clean up the pieces with bit of beeswax oil or with natural and black shoe polish for the light and dark sides. See various videos and threads on how to do that. The damaged knight will look less conspicuous after a clean and wax - as the raw wood will be closer in colour to the rest of the white pieces, once refinished. Then just enjoy the set for what it is … and old, damaged set. It’s unlikely to fetch much value but maybe the value isn’t monetary - it’s the joy you get from breathing new life into the old set. That said, if that doesn’t sound like something you’d enjoy - gift it to a thrift shop and send it on a new life for a good cause.

Thanks for the info will try some beeswax and look at a few videos about getting them back into battle, one could look at them as battle scars as well i surpose is just a pity it was the knight that is so bad as its the hardest to fix ,i was trying to make a mould from the good knight and use sawdust and wood glue, then place the broking knight into the mould fill it up and hope for the best, but all i had was playdo and it would not keep the shape so well, ill see how they look after a good clean and wax and take it from there and if ever a lardy knight shows up on the web it was meant to be,

thanks again and have a nice day all

I seem to remember, that Dr. Holger Langer, who posts historical sets within his collection, and has a photo-rich website has in the past mentioned about a FaceBook Group that is dedicated to missing and replacement pieces. I did some searching, but could not locate the post, sorry. You might reach out to him @EfimLG47 within these forums or by PM. He might be able to advise you on your wn search. That or maybe eBay?

I also believe, like others have mentioned, that if your set has sentimental value-- the search for a replacement is worthwhile.

Happy refurbishing and then, chess playing!

That’s a FB group I’ll see if it’s still active.
