Ah right, you did get the expired date pre-rolled one that was on sale eh? I will never never ever do that again. Last time I did that, I ended up with a lathe suddenly showing up at my door a week later
Just sharing my Dubrovnik set with you all

Michael,I'm just sucking up to you,in hopes you'll be nice to me if I get up the nerve to issue a challenge.....Instigated by MCH.
Any time buddy!
I love this thread so much. I'm currently working on a folding board myself, and looking at what ibuildchess has done, with constructive productive comments from experts, all appreciating each others' work with no butting of heads at all is just awesome.
The board I'm building is a folding board for a Dubro set, and the two issues I'm trying to figure out are 1) what hinges, and 2) how I want to line the inside of the box (or not). This thread is super helpful in figuring out #2*, and I get to see beautiful work.
And then on top, jacmater and Gregor(!) just pop in with total humility and appreciate ibuildchess' fantastic work.
A+ would read again.
* I think I'm just gonna go with two velvet bags and not line the inside of the box so the backside of the (solid) board shows through.

Beautiful chess set. I especially love the board.
The rich color of the dark pieces is mouthwatering!

Thank you so much for your kind words! I appreciate them very much!
I agree that velvet bags or having the pieces loosely stored in the board (lined with felt) is better than the fitted coffers. The coffers are not very convenient for pulling pieces out to play, though they do effectively protect your pieces if you have luxury ones!
I used some 2" (50mm) lamp brand brass butt hinges, however even with a hinge gain cut I needed to add those little feet in the corners of the board to keep the middle of the board from crowning on the hinge pins. I'd recommend you do that! Or just make the board magnetic and use some rare earth rod magnets to hold it together, I'm a big fan of magnets, though they're not as classy as hinges.
Good luck!

Thank you! I have other boards I've made, I love this set and I am currently on hold with a custom Lardy set I started last year.

great work
are you making the lardy set?
If so post some progress pics please
Thanks!
I am but I fell off working on it once my marriage fell apart. Things have been busy with the move and the loss of my shop but I'll get back to it once things slow down.
Here's a link to the thread about it:

Thanks for your input. I'm still deciding between magnets and hinges. I had the same idea as yours re: adding feet to keep the hinges from scratching a table, and then adding counter-holes to allow the box to close - glad to know it actually works out in practice. That's may well be better / classier, but I can't help trying out a new idea to see if it works before going back to that.
I've already received magnets in the mail (with extras) and will test them out on blank boards to see if I like the main hinge. The idea is I'll mortise in four magnets (40mmx10x5) in the same locations where you would normally put the mortises for the hinge plates, let two magnet surfaces face out flush to the edge and face of the wood, and then the magnets 'hinge' between the 'edges' and 'faces' of the magnets. Then I'll add smaller / weaker round magnets the way you did on the 'clasp' side to hold the box closed.
And for aesthetics, I think I will test out spray-painting the shiny nickel magnets with an antique brass / pewter / oil-rubbed bronze finish. No idea if this will look good / wear ok, but that's what testing is for I guess.
Finally, I went on a hunt for velvet bags, decided they needed to be flattish to minimise the height of the board, and ended up with this:
Seems appropriate, and they're nice enough for me. I thought about getting different colours, but then I decided that this way you can just have your opponent pick a bag instead of the normal 'choose a hand' thing with different coloured pawns in each hand.
I rang you at home and you didn't answer, I didn't know what to do and went to a coffee shop and..., I don't know why, I don't remember anything else...
