I have another plastic set which is of French origin, but in my view the pieces were clearly influenced by the Knubbel style.
Knubbel Chess Sets

@EfimLG47 - Looking at your set I now realise that my queens must have lost their top at some point. Shame as I was probably gonna try to sell them

Getting back into the Knubbels.
Found another plastic set (this time with queen tops intact) that looks very much like the style of the set in the photo of Bent Larsen earlier in this thread:
I also got this wooden set with a lot of patina. I like the worn/peeling look:

Lovely stuff @MCH818. I have a rather generic CB repro… yours has a wonderful quirkiness to it… which is a good thing! A great pick up, enjoy!

BTW, the word Knubbel means "knob" or "nub" in German, so I'd say a Knubbel set is defined by being short, wide and rounded :-)

I am currently doing research on the origins of the Knubbel set. We know that it was very popular in Denmark. But somehow the idea evolved that the design was developed in the German Erzgebirge region. I think it was the late Nicholas Lanier, who originally came up with this idea on his chessmuseum website. And many others - me included - followed this approach. But from today's perspective, I think it is probably (or likely) wrong.
MCH,MCH,MCH....Knowing what set I am lusting for,why would you add fuel to the fire and display such a "Cutie"?....Board too!
Are you trying to get me divorced?

Just got my Knubbel chess set , It's kind of sweet it's the same one as MCH818 , Will post some photos later ,for now i need to find the right size chess board , Any ideas whats a good size Sq fit would be ?

Ok , Here's some grab shots of the Mac , from a Danish seller on Ebay , it's really sweet & very nice for it's age + has some scars" but then don't we all " Also came with it's box , As other's have posted on this chess set will keep it simple .
Just to add it's a real vintage Gem & worth it / as these set will only go up in price .

Nice! I like your box more than mine. Is there box finger jointed?
MCH818 it's really a simple box with small nails , no joints

I really do not know much about this set or box , can see why bent larsen liked his , very easy to travel with , This would be more a question for EfimLG47 ,

Yes, I really like mine - just a CB repro on a simple vintage board. I wish I had vintage pieces but alas no - I have yet to find one that someone has discarded on their hard rubbish pile (noting a reference to a recent find in another thread) …. One can only hope?

10 Euros- without the purple king, okay. Total after having king made 49. Thank you, Helge! Absurd Nierentisch match Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream (Nicolette)

No stamp , did recheck EfimLG47 photo , it's the same style of box which is a +
ungewichtet That 's a real deal , was it with a box ?
Powderdigit will pm you

lighthouse No box, 31 pieces that just came in a padded envelope. 10 was the starting bid, the missing king may have put some people off. Also, it was not advertised as knubbel.. and it was some 12 or 15 years ago.
mch818 while I believe a complete set in a box is worth double, of course I agree that I was lucky to find these. Maybe the turning was not 40 but 30 or 35, even. But I had to stain it myself, and neither colour nor surface are perfect- they are perfect in the way they are not perfect, though. So, all in all with pigments and shipping a bit over 50 Euros. At that time, when I got interested in historical chess sets, I was quite surprised to find out one piece would cost 30 or 40 to be redone from the original. And that one needed no carving- a knight might be still quite another thing.
Freshly stained it was too dark.. I just checked, today the king looks a little better.

ungewichtet Yes there do seem.s to have a Art deco feel from that time ,
I am bit later to the party ,over the Knubbel sets , I hope EfimLG47 will shine more light over the history of theses small Gems in time .
Mikill Esty prices are crazy for theses sets ,
Here's my set on a board + box
@Mikill - I have exactly the same set and I think these do qualify as Knubbel, in fact rather beautiful versions in this colour combination. I would second your guess that these are 1970's / 1980's.
