Lardy appreciation thread.

and look at that, today's the day. Just scored what I think is a perfect 4.25" Lardy from the 70s in a brown stain for the dark pieces (not lacquered). So excited.
Are you sure its 4.25 brown ?

I don't mean to throw a grenade but if it is a 4.25 that would be a rare find. I have never seen a factory Lardy set that size in brown. Even if it is a 3.75 if you snagged it for a good price that is a score.

@Audioq The first picture was from Ebay. That's not a real one? It looks real to me but I am not an expert. Here is the link https://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-CHESS-SET-FRENCH-LARDY-WEIGHTED-STAUNTON-K-93-mm-ORIG-BOX-NO-BOARD/153956291486?hash=item23d882939e:g:yA8AAOSw-2xe1Rr2

MCH that seller is a reputable guy. I would say its a very good copy if it is not real. Rosewood? It is not brown stain. Also the box looks legit. It appears to be a late 80s or so.

I remember when I was just a kid I use to see those chess computers in the window of the game and toy shops at the mall, and they looked sooooo cool. I wanted one so much but as you said they were expensive. I knew not to even ask my parents.
Can you Lardy experts tell me which Lardy sets were produced in the largest size with these kinds of Queens? The sets I see online have the narrower queen's crowns and the kinds of sets I admired from the 70s and 80s tended to have these wider flatter queen's crowns as well as more streamlined (to my eye) knights.

So... question to the team.
I just got a 4.25" Lardy set in the mail with (drumroll please) NO LEANERS.
My question -> what's the best recommendation you have for preventing leaners on my watch? Should I not store them in the box? Store them with silica packets? I live in a climate controlled house in very humid Virginia.

Obviously lack of extreme humidity helps but given the likely age of the set you bought, I'd imagine the wood is fully cured at this stage and only exposure to real damp would cause it to warp. Probably (?)😊

Audio is right. By now if they have no cracks I would not worry about storage unless they are exposed to an radical environment swing from humid to dry.

I finally purchased a Lardy set. I found this set on Etsy from a seller named RestorationRetro. I just love those knights. There are no leaners in this one except for maybe a slight lean in the dark king. The set looks like it was barely ever used. The king height is a 105 mm which is a little large for my 2.25" board.
The box and labels are in good condition.
