Well,I'm about 15 minutes away from having some French wine, while my Lardy set sits in it's nice box.....The wine cost me more than the set and it's not an expensive vintage.-happy.png

True mister James, there is something beautiful in the simplicity of French sets.

But for everyday play, nothing beats a Lardy-style set! The pieces feel so right in my hand. Besides, they’re very attractive sets as well.
Unfortunately, I’ve never owned an set actually made by Lardy. I had a beautiful (and inexpensive) boxwood set from USCF Sales that I’ve since lost. I now have a Lardy reproduction from HoS, and a few other French “club” sets. I just adore them!

It is never too late to get one today.

My 3.75" Lardy arrived today. Here it is:

The set is in excellent condition. There is one large gash on the top of the box. Four of the pieces have some really minor issue from knots. The below is probably the worst of the 4.

[edit] I posted the wrong pawn. This is the worst one.

Congrats! Looks great to me. Enjoy!

Nice looking set and goes extremely well with that board....I hope you get much pleasure from owning it.

Thanks @wids88 and @Magictwanger!

You. It was YOU. I was messaging with the seller in real time about getting a straight-on photo of the pieces to check for leans. And you bought it right when the photo checked out and I was about to purchase it. Literally 30 seconds. Fair is fair. Let me know if you change your mind about the set. thumbup.png

I don't regret pausing and asking the seller for the extra photo to be sure. I've just been burned too many times with these old Lardy sets. I had to be careful. Enjoy the set.

Thanks! You know what's funny. I saw the ad the night before. I didn't pull the trigger that night because I already bought the 105 mm one. Then I checked the next day and no one bought it. I wondered why that was because the set looked so good from the photos. I thought what the heck. How bad can it be. I made an offer and the seller accepted.

The buy turned out well, but you were right to ask questions and for additional photos. I didn't ask for my recent Chavet purchase and as a result there were some unexpected issues. I would have pulled the trigger on the Chavet set regardless so no harm no foul.

I wouldn't think you would want this Lardy set since you just bought the '74 Olympiad set in great condition. What a bad assumption on my part. I should know better after being here at CB&E for some time. Haha!

My collection is always in flux. Buying, selling, upgrading and hoping not to lose too much money in the process. Quality over Quantity. There were issues with that 3.75" Olympiad Lardy set that I just couldn't live with since I paid (what I felt was) a premium for that set. A couple of slight leans. A poorly located knot on the front of the Knight's face. It wasn't a keeper for me.

MCH818

I'm sorry to hear that about the Olympiad set. It looked really good in the photos. Out of curiosity, how hard would it be to find individual replacement pieces in good condition on eBay? I see a lot of them posted. I wonder if you could just place replace the problematic pieces.

I feel the same way about quality over quantity. I rather pay up for good quality. @TheOneCalledMichael and I just had a conversation about upgrading. I asked him if it would be possible to find a Chavet B210 without any cracked pieces and he said probably not. He suggested that I keep buying B210s until I find the perfect one.

Ohhh this one looks pristine too! You have done well scoring these two sets! Congratz!

Thanks! I got lucky with this one. The 105 mm was good too but that one had a big chip on the body of the knight. It was still very good considering that these sets are so old.

TheOneCalledMichael

It was a local find, I thought it was black lacquered Lardy's but it turned out to be either black painted or ebonized. To my pleasant surprise it also has a label underneath the box and I have never seen this type before ST 7|5|CH (the number 7 is odd). Another odd thing the knight chest doesn't have dents nor V shape cuts. Anyone ever seen this before?

MCH818

Nice! The finish on the dark pieces look very nice. The white army looks to be new. Great find!

Too many nice chess sets in this forum, not a good thing for a mind like mine, and that professional photos doesn't help!!  My brain is starting to start again, it's been on standby for a few months, but these images are waking it up!!

Spin that lathe master Jac! Make some beauty sets again happy.png

All I know is that in 6th grade Slinky got into trouble for calling someone Lardy. I can't imagine the fallout today if someone said that.
