Hmm… I didn’t think I’d like them but the greenies do seem to grow on me too @TheOne. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Yeah I think I know why I sort of didn't like them. The pieces itself it looks pretty but the color makes it not easy to find a suitable board to blend in.

Congrats! The knights are so beautiful in the older Chavet sets.

Totally agree, in particular the flushed knights are just beautiful.

Got another Romanian set, Romanian clock included for really cheap. Nice nice.

MCH818

Congrats! Like I mentioned it reminds me of a coffee house set.

TheOneCalledMichael

Yes it is. I have talked with someone from Romania who collects Romanian sets and he told me it has influence from Austrian coffee house set. In fact, decades ago a German speaking turner took Romanian apprentices and thought them to turn. That's how it came. More or less happy.png

That’s why there is a resemblance. That makes total sense now.

I need a chess set! I’ve been playing online for more than a year now, and it appears this hobby will stick around with me.

I’m doubting between buying new (I really like the FIDE WCC set!) or vintage/antique. Most of the really old sets don’t attract me, but I like the Chavet-style Knights.

I ran into the set shown below. Unfortunately there’s no original box, but the pieces look nice to me.

Any thoughts on these knights?

TheOneCalledMichael

Those are Chavet, nice one! It's weighted as well. KH 82mm?

TirrojG

It’s 90mm actually!

I could get it for around €110. Including a board, which I think isn’t original. But it’s looks good. The box is missing unfortunately.

What year would you think they are?

Pawnerai

@TirrojG  This being your first set — just to put it out there — when buying a vintage French set there are some things you should be aware of. Mainly, rattling weights, leaning pieces and wood quality. Some find it charming. Some find it a dealbreaker. Some don't even notice unless it's pointed out.

€110 seems like a fine price if the board is decent. Wood? 50mm squares?

TirrojG

@pawnerai fair point! I have sone experience in the vintage watch side of things, so I know I don’t mind a bit of history to a set.

for me it’s either: minimalistic and new, I like the FIDE WCC set (grey is nice!), or vintage. The Chavet style knights look best to me (the wcc set actually has similar).

In the end I would like to buy something that can go to my kids when they get their own place…

That looks like a very nice set, especially at that price!  And don't worry about a box, just set up and play, play, play!  wink.png

(If you really want a box (and a bag won't do) there's an overwhelming number of options available online.)

TheOneCalledMichael

ah you do wrote something, I couldn't see it as it appears blank. 90mm for 110 euro is good deal! Take it! That looks like around 1980-1990 somewhere in that period.

TirrojG

Cool, I’ll try and get it. As a watch aficionado I maybe care too much about the original box being there.

MCH818

@TirrojG Nice find! Some Chavet sets did not come with a box so you should be fine without it.

Bulgarian set from 1983

MCH818

That’s an interesting set. It definitely has that eastern European look. The rooks remind me of Soviet rooks and the bulbous bases remind me of a Dubrovnik set.

TheOneCalledMichael

Yeah I'm a sucker for bulbous bases happy.png

MCH818

Yeah I know. I think you like bulbous bases as much as I like Cooke sets.

TheOneCalledMichael

Not true! I also like flat tire bases and half empty bases!
