Looking for ideas on what to add to our chess clock

Hey Guys,

I'm Shelby lohrman from VTek.  We recently came out with our own new clock,  The VTek 300.

Our goal is to make it the best clock on the market.  We feel we have a pretty good idea on what's needed in our market,  but we need your help with ideas on how to make it better.

What are some of the ideas you have that have been bothering you about the clocks you currently use?   Or some of the features that you think makes your clocks better than the others on the market.

One of the cool features of our clock is the ability for us to update the firmware.  It's also one of the reasons our clock is expensive.  By getting your ideas we hope that we can make our clock the best it can be.  our goal is by doing this is to make our clock the last one you'll ever have to purchase.

Thanks,

Shelby Lohrman

programming the clock is limited by the available hardware input controls. So why can't I program/update the time controls in my smartphone and then synch the clock/settings through NFC or Bluetooth? That would make setting time controls easier.

Also, if you take that one step further, you could keep your clock synched with an app on your phone - that way you could wander away from your board at a tournament and still keep an eye on your time...

Hi Shelby, maybe not that great of an idea but I know the Digital Turnier Garde had an outlet in it to hook up to a USB port on your computer. Why couldn't the RAM be updated through that making even minor changes accessible fast with no cost in shipping?  I know that is very possible. Maybe the engineering change would be more trouble than its worth?

BTW I plan on getting the second run of your clock for sure or maybe even one of the originals.  Just have to get past a few things in my life so I can play tournaments.

I know you understand for the person who won't spring for more than $40 is going to be a DGT/NA buyer and you will never sell them.  I do think this is an easier leap for the chronos buyer.

Great initiative.

Make it smaller.

yeah maybe keep a record of the time spent on each move, and be able to access that data from the clock afterwards

Yeah, FIDE would love that

Especially since you're not even supposed to have a phone in the playing hall with you.

Lower the price.. right the only achievement this clock got is highest price.. best clock title still hold by chronos... allowing people to program this clock is not good because thet can cheat...

Played my first OTB game with this clock last night. Generally pleased with it, but I found the button mechanism to not be as comfortable as I would have liked. With squared corners, it felt like I was jabbing my finger every time I pressed the button.

I also felt that the display counting down tenths of seconds was highly distracting, although the owner told me after the game that this was a user setting which could be disabled.

The buttons are identical to those on the Chronos clocks, of course not the touch sensor ones.

I never, ever, never use the tenths of seconds options on either my Chronos or V-Tek clocks.  It really is annoying.

All but one of the presets, to my recollection, on the V-Tek, do not have the tenths of seconds option activated.  I believe it is only the blitz one or so.

First I have never heard of the jabbing complaint. Does anyone else have this problem because that would be a game changer for me.

The buttons are the exact same on the Chronos and VTek.  And I truly mean identical.

For instance, I have exchanged the button tops from the Chronos to the V-Tek and back.  They are the same.

The only difference is that the V-Tek has the buttons sit higher than the Chronos does.  The Chronos body is lower and sleeker in design.

Avatar of TundraMike

Does the higher body make your hand bump into the corner of the clock each time you press it?  That would be irritating, but then maybe that user has a unique way of hitting the button?

Well, my friend and I that have played chess every week for 1 1/2 - 2 hours, blitz, for 19 1/2 years now have not noticed any problem or difference  from the VTek to the Chronos as far as button feel.

In all honesty, the VTek is a glorified or updated Chronos.  And the updating is only in the programming and secondarily the color of the LED indicators.  In fact, it is easy to forget you are playing with a VTek and not a Chronos clock.  They are that similar.

Hi Shelby, I see it is being offered in different colors now.  The new colors, are they all with the updated program?  Thx, Mike

Seriously looking to buy this. Seems it is pretty hard to suggest any improvements which tells me this is about as good as it gets.  Cool

A good clock should NOT have a "beep" function that makes any noise.  These are always a nuisance.  Why have the function at all?

A clock should also be able to be "read" by the person whose clock it is not.  This to avoid cheating in setting the clock and then choosing which side of the board it will be on.

It should have feature for delay as well as increment. And common settings for tournaments played in the US, Europe and Asia.

It should have a push button or rocker button, NOT a touch sensitive button.

Forget the move counter.  It's wholly unnecessary.  That is what scoresheets are for.

The owner should have a place to enter his or her identification information, to deter theft.

It should look pleasing to the eye.  The less expensive DGT clocks that Kramnik advertised were ugly, as is the touch sensitive Chronos.

Can I order a clock with "Stainless steel touch sensing" buttons?

Avatar of Bawker

Hello!

I disagree with just about EVERYTHING that Spassky69 wrote.

I want a "beep" function, and LED light for each player.  Make these options selectable so you can turn them off.

I would like to see a "touch sensor" version... all my Chronos clocks are TS, and I like it.

I want a move counter option.

I care more about ruggedness and reliability than appearance... make a metal version.

I'm not worried about theft, but a unique serial number in firmware that can be accessed would be a good feature for those who are concerned about it.

As for the USB and phone interface stuff... meh.  If it's useful and doesn't get in the way of normal operation, go for it... but I won't pay extra for it or probably even use it.  Keep it simple and easy to use, that that will be worth more than 1,000 bells and whistles and "features" of dubious worth would be. happy.png

I love the features of the Chronos, but I hate the programming complexity and having to carry the manual around with me on the off chance I'll have to re-program something.  Make a clock of equal durability, simplicity, and feature set... but dump the difficult interface in favor of a simple, uniform programming method and you will have a WINNER! happy.png

Are there any Chess.com members out there whom have purchased the VTek300?
