Pocket / passport / travel / wallet / slot / chess set. (non-magnetic)

thumbdown.png  HOS has a garbage pleather version with no notations and not enough slots on the sides for $45 It must've cost them $3 to make in China. (Below)

thumbup.png  Below is a nice vintage one. Cardboard and cloth(?). Doesn't need to be fancy leather or anything. An affordable and usable version similar to the one below is just fine. How much could these possibly be to make? $3 for the cardboard/cloth/glue book. Plus $2 for the plastic stamped pieces?  @ShelbyLohrman can sell these for $20 all day long.

Nice one, but very overpriced.
Shouldn’t be too complicated to create an own.
Just need to print a chessboard on a textile like cotton and glue it inside an old notebook.
Cutting them properly and find some appropriate pieces ...
Incredible how somebody can promote a trash as the only item available (USCF branded! ).
It’s completely ridiculous, designed by somebody who’s not even a clue of a chess play.
This will definitely be my next project.

The best classic would be a return of the iconic Drueke Players Choice set. A return in plastic form is what I would like to see. HoS did an awesome wooden version but is kinda light compared to the original.

I do have a variation of this set that is currently made. Although it doesn't go by the name of Players Choice nor is it made by the Drueke/Carrom company.

I think there's something to be said for thicker pieces. The set from the 1886 championship in New York would be a great set to bring back.

Yes, please!! A Lardy repro set based on the full sized Olympiad set.  Especially important to get the knight, queen, and bishop right!

No one makes a decent 4" Lardy repro set. Vintage ones show up few and far between on eBay in the $350 range. And even then, you'll be dealing with the leans. I'd be more than happy to purchase a modern repro over vintage just to not have to deal with the leaning pieces due to the garbage wood they used when they were cranking out the sets for export back in the day.

There are different carvings throughout the years. I find the one below to be the most pleasing and Lardy-esque when someone thinks of Lardy.

Interesting...people were asking for 15" silicone.  Will need to price out 15" mousepads instead.

@ShelbyLohrman   For me personally, a 14-15" silicone board is useful for compact travel, lunch break and backpacking. Silicone is durable, waterproof and stainproof.

The mousepad polyester material will stain too easily when using it outdoors and tables with food, drink, coffee, etc. A 14-15" mousepad would be perfect for indoor, at-home analysis though. I might get one of those too!

If there's not enough interest in the silicone, it's fine, there is one product available which I previously linked to in Post #15. No biggie.

All synthetic material has different performance ;

Silicon is good for outdoor play, even specially non-felted (wood) pieces. Indoor it's catastrophic, for electric-statical charge it pull in too easy all kind of dust, animal hairs etc.

Vinyl is the best option for indoor in combination with weighted plastic pieces and

Mousepad is fine with felted wood pieces.

But nothing comes even close to a wooden board. wink.png

Being relatively new it seems his website is undergoing some changes... All you have to do is go to the home page and go from there ( I found them easily enough that way). According to earlier info the sets will be available in June

So Shelby, there were quite a few mentions of a Dubrovnik set in plastic - any thoughts?

Yeah I read those comments too. Quite a few I must say, more then any other set mentioned I think.

MrGalang

+5. I would also be interested in a solid, quadruple weighted plastic Dubrovnik set!

TheOneCalledMichael

True it cost a lot to start it going, but then again you would be the only manufacturer/seller with high quality triple weighted plastic Dubrovnik set.

Consider almost every seller, even the little ones on Etsy, has a Dubrovnik line, it must say something about the popularity right?

ogbumblingpatzer

Count me in for a plastic Dubrovnik set or two. I'll wait wink.png

Westsailor32

Not I.... I've recently warmed to the Dubrovnik style and it's all about the wood. Wood gives it its unique character that plastic never could

Changes in materials could bring the set to a more affordable price.

You could definitely count me in for a couple of Dubrovniks - and if you made them in different colors (I’m assuming you could use the same molds?) I’m guessing you could get a bunch of us buying in multiples.

Even though there are 2 plastic Dubrovnik sets already on the market for $16 USD (photos below), a high-end plastic, well molded, Dubrovnik set with the new weighting system is a definite BUY for me. Charge the same $45 USD as the Ultimates. It'll sell just as well.

I bought the tan colored one, the weighting is all over the place and it's 600g instead of advertised 900g. They are filled with paraffin wax, they were filled when the pieces were hold upside down so all the wax were mostly from the middle to the top. Some of the sealing were cracked so I can see when the pieces are in hot place, the wax will melt and coming through the cracked sealing into the thin felts.

They still sell well though as they're the only one that offers reasonable good looking plastic Dub sets.

Going by Shelby's estimates, chessgamesshop may have paid roughly $30,000 USD for those 2 Dubrovnik molds. They have to sell a literal TON of them to make back their investment and then turn a profit. I'm not surprised they skimped on everything else trying to squeeze out profit. The bases don't even match. LOL

@TheOneCalledMichael   Have you posted a review w/pics about your plastic Dubrovnik set from ChessGamesShop on the forum? It's worth writing/reading about, even if it's garbage quality. As a warning to others who might be interested. Although for $16 USD, potential customers already have an idea of the quality.
