Looking to buy a new Set

Actually im looking for a set that someone is going to buy me for christmas :D.

Basically, right now i have a really really really nice metal set that probably cost around $100-$150.

Although technically it is not mine, it is my dads and he wants it back.

The only other set i have, is from one of those like 9-in-one sets. The set is made of wood which i do like.

However,  what i was looking for was having the following.

A wooden or metal set with pieces that have some weight behind them. It would also be great if i could get a board with the Ranks and Files numbered and lettered right on the board. I would also like to try to keep the price under $30 not including shipping.

This set does not have to be for travel since i would rarely do that. And if that be the case i could always buy one of those $10 tournament sets. Or one of those really cheapy $5 chess/checkers sets from wal-mart.

As for size i would like something around the 12-16" sized board range And a 2 1/4 - 3" base pieces.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Even though its bigger i would like to take a look at it, maybe it might give me an idea. What did you have in mind?

Naw. The set I had in mind was too big. He wants a library set at most.

Make sure there is a clear distinction between colour of both side, I brought a nice one in Europe years ago and when the light is not perfect than it is hard to tell who's pieces are who's

Goldendog, i would still like to see what you had in mind. Even if it is a little bigger. Maybe it will give me some ideas.

Very standard design, a knockoff of the USCF Club Special that was sold for decades. I have the ebonized version and find it to be excellent for all-around use. If you wanted a full-sized wooden set that was good quality for not so much money, this would be a very solid candidate.

I also have a 3" library set in ebony and boxwood that was dirt cheap a bunch of years ago. I'll see what kind of pics I have and post one just for kicks.

Here is the 3" set on a smallish footprint 2-1/8" maple/teak board. Not the ideal board for it--squares are too big--but it's one I can put in front of the monitor and play a few g/15 v. ChessMaster. That works out well.

Like I said, dirt cheap (c. $10 as I recall) and surprisingly nice ebony. Only the king has a little brown in it. Pretty heavy for its size. Knights are fugly.

where did you find it at?

Ebay purchase from a Brooklyn importer of the typical Indian stuff, and Indian on both sides.

House of Jacques they were called, but they stopped existing. It wouldn't surprise me if such sets were found on eBay still. I mean, they must be making them, but the days of winning one with a low low bid are likely gone.

HOS sells some 3" sets too. Def take a look there (maybe their Classic).

If you're still looking for a cheap set, Walmart has folding chess sets for $20.  The pieces are kind of plain and I don't think they're weighted, but it's a decent board & set for that price.  I bought one for my son a couple months ago for his birthday and can't wait to give it to him.

What's laughable is that they include a "how to" paper with the set to teach you how to play.
