Wooden or marble are worth more than the lightweight plastic, and the plastic can bend, but the plastic ones are still worth 400 dollars. I got a good deal, instead of a collectors edition for 400, I got it for……75 dollars. Can you believe that?
Major chess vendor sent me a desaster, horrable set of chessmen...HELP!
A disgrace period! I've had numerous issues with a well known vendor and the only way I got satisfaction was to apply pressure...here....on Chess.com.
I'm very sorry you had to deal with this......There's no excuse.
They did that on purpose to take your money. That is junk. My collectors edition sets that are plastic are better quality than that,
You make it sound like plastic pieces are in some way inferior...
My plastic pieces never make good moves in time pressure.
====UPDATE====
--No emails this morning, so I engaged in the chat option. Had a very lengthy conversation with "someone". In the past 48 hours I've been really trying to sort out what cause this "error" and discussed my conclusion with the chat person and they agreed--mostly. :-)
--We've come to this conclusion; There were clear errors with regards to the size of the bases with the bishop ebony pieces and the photos depicting the color of the pieces I received compared to the photo on their website are vastly different. When I opened the box, I was pretty shocked! It was really bad, well, you all can see the pictures. Their idea of antiqued is way off.
NOTE: I 100 percent prefer natural woods, no human meddling, however that option wasn't available.
--Keeping things moving in a direction of resolution with minimal pain, I've decided to have some understanding on how this error happened. Yeah, I know...the picture compassion should be one and done fact but that's not going to get me to the end by continuing the fight--compromise was the best way out.
--I'm happy with the outcome, even though it will cost me "some" return shipping money. In the end I will receive what I originally wanted, plain boxwood and ebony, (bud rosewood would be nice too!)
--finally received an email this morning that I'm sharing here, will explain exactly the resolution.
Thank you your all messages and emails and we XXXXXX team are sorry for your inconvenience regarding the purchase. We have accepted your request and we are soon going to make one complete boxwood side and two ebony bishops & two ebony knights. We will soon confirm you the dispatch with tracking number as well we request you to be kind to return our Antique boxwood side along with two ebony bishops & two ebony knights to the address below.
Please also note that on declarations please put value not more that $15 plus also mention damage or sample pieces
--The reason for also returning the knights is because they wanted to send 4, very good matching knights, it would have been hard to match exactly with the ones I have received.
--my return shipping cost with be something I need to get past and just move on, it's not going to help anything by letting it eat me alive....something I cant change. I just have to remind myself that I'll have a very good complete set with the natural boxwood like I wanted from the start...just went about it the long way around.
--also, I inquired about having only ONE side made in bud rosewood so I have options of a nice choice for games....with the same set, the quote was $300, 75 percent of a full set cost....I'm passing on that one.....for now.
--anyway, please chime in on my endeavor, I'm curious to know how everyone views this small episode in chess life. I will post a pic below depicting VERY close to the photo on the vendors website, you compare it to my photos here of the, I call them the shoe polish set.
--overall, I can see the vendor is also making some compromises to accommodate me so I must take that into account. If I receive the replacement pieces and everything looks good, I'll be very happy, and report that here with "in the end" photos. If enough people here feel it's ok to reveal the vendor, I might consider it if it shows them in a very positive light, I don't like causing problems for people If I feel they meet me half way and are reasonable--which I feel they are.
Thanks for reading...you all can roast me now...
That is still bad.
As I said in the past. If you can get a 3rd party guarantee on a chess set. Like buying through Amazon. That is the best option. And you avoid dealing with this type of hassle and return charges.
Yea when it comes to the Asia market , seems like the only way to go or esty + paypal , that way you can at least get your money back you hope ! choppie3 Stil $500 Is no small sum , In your case seem like it's been a piss take of kind , The fact you have to pay return post + mark it as $15 says a lot about the seller ? good luck with the out come .![]()

Reluctantly, I'm going to have to agree with you. I have been looking hard online for more examples, and I have found them, very walnut looking or mahogany looking colors on chessmen they are calling antiqued. It's coming down to someones perception on what antiqued should look like. To me, it's very clear that it's a wrong name for the actual end product. They look like chocolate candy you give out on Easter...just saying
This is why you should only buy natural woods. I think all antique coatings look disgusting.
And remember that antique coating will only look at it's best The first day you open your set. And it is all downhill from there.
Normally I'd agree with this 100%, but in this case I don't think it's possible for these pieces to look any worse than they do now.

I'm not having any cooperation from the vendor! 100 percent the photo on their website looks NOTHING like what they shipped me yet they want me tp pay shipping to return them....I'm getting close to revealing just who they are. I'd be very happy to have the light set in plane boxwood...but its really BS having to pay return shipping.....DHL quoted me $270.00, next I will check USPS....Express mall.... does anyone have any advice on how i sould proceed....
Let them know, out of respect and to give them a chance at redemption, you won't name them on Chess.com (they know how powerful a site this is) if they "immediately" solve your issue!
That's worked for me numerous times...Sadly!
Good luck.

I'm going to take another photo for comparison and post it here for more to comment on to validate my complaint. During a chat session on their website, I pointed out the GROSS difference in the photo com paired to what I received. Their reply was, the cameras we use are the most expensive and are accurate.... Its HILARIOUS that the photo I took with my phone.....looks EXACTLY what I'm looking at in front of me on the table...!!!!
One photo seen here was enough. It amazes me that they didn't immediately take care of you...Pathetic business practice! They "so deserve" to be flamed here, on this site.
This incident reminds me how happy I am to be pretty much finished with my collection. I think 22 full size sets, 3 travel sets and 4 boards is "it"....Thank God!
I've had enough experience to think that this industry leaves much to be desired, from a customer perspective, if you choose the more common vendors.
Sheesh!

It´s a start.
I’ve had a long day at work, storms last night so… not much sleep either and now… a storm in my head reading this thread. How is it feasible that this is still being argued? The pieces were a different size for crying out loud.
I pride myself on balance and giving people a chance - who knows who has a bad day - mistakes happen - but this seems nuts! Please just give the person the pieces they ordered!!!
I can’t imagine paying USD 400-500 for any set (I doubt I ever would - that’s not a judgement on anyone; it’s just not my budget but I respect other people that do buy expensive sets - no drama and I often look on with envy) - but … if I ever did spend that on a set and got pieces the wrong size I would make a polite enquiry and then if it was not fixed - I’d rip them a new hole; loudly and publically to warn others. What a pain - I feel for you!
I've never seen another industry where the quality control is as iffy as in buying chess sets.
I don't believe the excuses that some folks make about different cultures do things differently either. People work hard for their money and the expectations for something nice isn't a stretch.
Too many vendors simply don't deserve their customer base. Take care of your customers. Put out a consistently good product and you stay in business for a long time.
This thread has gotten my goat since it reminds me of the more than a few times, when I started out buying and had numerous issues. Whenever I attempted to message the seller, a popular one, who shall not have my business again, their response to me was...."We never got your message and your Email doesn't work".....Funny, because every day I'd get advertisements from that seller....On "that" Email address.
Laughable industry for consistency, unless one decides to go the Noj, or custom route ala Oleg.

@choppie3 Were you going to post a picture from the vendor for comparison? Or just put a link to the website of your purchase.
In reading your 'UPDATE', there seems to be so many pitfalls that I would strongly recommend a clean and straight forward resolution. Just return the entire set and get a full refund now. If and when they do make a new set, you can then buy it when it's ready. And be sure that the vendor pays for the return and they give you the shipping label.
