I'm going to take another photo for comparison and post it here for more to comment on to validate my complaint. During a chat session on their website, I pointed out the GROSS difference in the photo com paired to what I received. Their reply was, the cameras we use are the most expensive and are accurate.... Its HILARIOUS that the photo I took with my phone.....looks EXACTLY what I'm looking at in front of me on the table...!!!!

@choppie3 Were you going to post a picture from the vendor for comparison? Or just put a link to the website of your purchase.

In reading your 'UPDATE', there seems to be so many pitfalls that I would strongly recommend a clean and straight forward resolution. Just return the entire set and get a full refund now. If and when they do make a new set, then you can then buy it when it's ready. And be sure that the vendor pays for the return and they give you the shipping label.

I saw that the vendor has a watermark on the photo, would have given up who it was. Their not going to send a shipping label, been going back and forth with the email. Best case is, it will cost me another $80 dollars to ship them back. After its over, I'll have paid what they normally charge for the set when it's not on sale....but I'll be able to get the natural boxwood for the light side which they don't offer.....I'll post the photo and vendor when It's all over.... everyone here can then decide on opinions of the whole transaction. Once you visit their website and look at the exact set I bought, looking at their pictures then compare them to what I received.... I'm hand making a custom chessboard for this set with 2.5" squares suing re-purposed woods I've saved for several years. Oak and Walnut.....should be a nice project. Of course I'll post photos here....

@choppie3 I really do hope everything works out to your satisfaction. I'm guessing you have your reasons to go your route, but I feel you should consider the following when making your decision.

  • There's not much incentive for them to make and ship you the new pieces since they already have your money. Or they can just take their time doing so.
  • Liability is on the shipper (you) for the return. If you value the package at $15 (as appropriate to avoid the hassle of a 9801 return claim) then you would only be compensated $15 if it's lost or damaged.
  • If you value the package at $400, then the vendor could refuse receipt if customs charges a tariff. If that happens, you'll most likely have lost that package to customs.
  • If the package is lost or damaged, then the vendor won't get those pieces back, and I'm pretty sure they won't send you your new pieces either.
  • You'll be out an additional $80 regardless of what happens, and could even be out the $400 since you were liable for the return shipment.
  • If all this takes too long, you may no longer have the option to dispute this purchase through however you paid for this, so you'll lose your leverage to get this resolved.
  • There's also the possibility that the replacement pieces might also have some issues. You really won't have any leverage then either.

There really is a good amount of risk here, so just some food for thought. I do hope it all ends well.

Who?

Let’s see if we can guess who is the “dark” chess vendor. Place your bets, please:

IMHO, you've waited eight days for acceptable resolution and received none. I agree with @DesperateKingWalk that third party protection is best in today's online world. I'd see no problem listing the seller's name publicly. This appears to be standard MOP and they're undoubtedly doing the same to other customers.

Is there really still a way to buy things on-line without 3rd party protection?

It’s Royal Chess Mall right? Choppie revealed that in the first post.

I dont think its RCM. @choppie3 posted that in one of his comments that it was purchased from another vendor.

This looks more like the set. However you never know. Better for the OP to confirm.

My bet is TCE too

Yeah, the picture of the set OP had posted matches the 1849 Jacques being sold by them ( The chess empire ). Also the price is in similar range of 400-500 $.

Yes you buy from the vendors website directly. Then you are totally at their mercy.

When the vendors sells through Amazon, or other online stores. They have rules they must obey. If the item says returnable. Amazon will allow the return to them if needed.

Everything else with the transaction is the same.

No, not really. We can buy directly from the vendors' websites and still be protected by VISA, PayPal, or Google pay. All have same protection policies. And not all vendors through Amazon follow the same rules. There's plenty vendors there that don't have free returns, charge restocking fees if there wasn't a problem, and even if the item was opened. So it's not all that easy on Amazon either. I'm still balking at buying a Dubrovnik set from Muba through Amazon because it's no different than ordering directly from their site.

Plus, the selection is way limited, and a lot of times overpriced through Amazon.

Correct Yenster.....I bought 2 storage boxes, for two sets, from Amazon and they were shipped in "literally" a thin plastic bag....No insulation material at all. As thin as one piece of scotch tape.

I messaged the seller and got crickets. put in a complaint to Amazon and my CC company and issue resolved. I was able to salvage one box, while the vendor disappeared. I assume Amazon kicked them out.

No guarantees there.

Avatar of hermanjohnell

Well, it was better in the not so old days when you bought your chess sets from an actual, brick and mortar, store. And you paid with actual money. Those were the days...

Avatar of magictwanger

You can say that again pal. I remember the numerous chess shops in Greenwich Village New York City back in the stone age. Got a nice French Lardy set there for 15 dollars and a beautiful Drueke "Little Jewel" travel set for 8 dollars. It was when I worked at the World Trade Center.

Dang! I'm old.wink

Yeah, @magictwanger, my dad bought something one time and got a box of books (not what he ordered). The seller pushed back saying that it was shipped and received, and Amazon didn't do anything about it, but my dad disputed with American Express and got a refund that way. I'm not saying Amazon's a bad site (I buy there a lot), it's just not a guarantee either.

Well @hermanjohnell, I need a ticket to Slovenia for that Dubrovnik set. Should a stay at a 'Hostel'? (I think that's where that movie was about)....(nope, it was about Slovakia).

Avatar of magictwanger

Amazon is an excellent site. I'm about to order some "Kind Bars" at 2/3 of what my super market charges. When it comes to my appetite, there's no boundaries.wink

Doubtful you can buy an Noj, S.C. or H.O.S. set there.....I hope I'm wrong.

I used to visit those towers and NYC every year when on business in Carlstadt. Then one year....

You know, I really wasn't planning on getting that set today....but heck....it's on the way. Amazon says arriving between Feb. 8 - Mar. 1. (ugh).

We install a TON of iPads for use as touch screens for control systems. The client buys a license for $300 and a programmer makes a program that will connect the ipad or iphone to a processor using RTI or ProControl. So typically we sell them a Sonance case to put the ipad in and a Sonance docking station which is all magnetic charging. The larger homes may have 15 ipads. One such order came in through UPS, all the Sonance sleeve/cases were taken out of the box and replaced by cans of Deep Woods OFF bug repellent....from costco The driver or in their warehouse some guy thought they were actual iPads that they were stealing....they go for about 200 each case, the vendor replaced them at no cost because we do lots of business with them....but for who ever stole them...they were useless.....they would have to buy a $300 base station charging dock to make it work... The picture on each of the sleeve boxes was the product in use showing how an ipad works with it...they looked like boxes of ipads to the shipper.... so the driver or in their warehouse they were stolen.....
