Manage my games?

I'm looking for a program that let me store my games that I download as pgn from chess.com in a database. I would also like to be able to annote my games, add variations and analyze with a third part engine, all within the same program. I'm currently using shredder, but I don't find it very convenient for managing a database or annote my games, as it displays annotations in a weird way. Is there such a program that I'm looking for? For free?

For free?  Scid or Arena.

Are using Shredder from Chesssbase or Shredder from the Shredder website?  I have had great success with the Shredder GUI from Shredderchess.com

I'll look in to scid and arena, thank you.

I'm using shredder from the shredder website. It disturbs me that annotations are displayed in the move list. I haven't found a way to change this.

I want to be able to do "game explorer" with games in my own database. AFAIK shredder can't do this, but maybe I've missed it?

Wou_Rem

Chess Base can do it.

Chess Base light is free. However, a good chess database is a worthy investment for your chess progress, so, unless you are VERY short on funds, consider buying one. Wink

Natalia:

I already have a superb database avaliable at chesstempo, were I have a premium membership. Of course, it would be nice to have all in one on my computer, so I will consider your suggestion. Would you recommend chessbase in that case?

No Shredder can't do that with a database as far as I know.  But annotations seem to belong in the move list don't they.

I use Chessbase for material searches and other such things.  Between Chessbase and the Shredder GUI I have everything I need.  (along with the Chessbase " Big" database.

I would rather have a setup like the game boards in this forum, where the annotations are displayed in a separate window and changed as the currently viewed position is changed. Does it not disturb you to read:

"17. Nd5 this was probably a mistake due to blablabla e4 the obvious answer that I didn't see 18. b3 trying to make the best of the situation, but perhaps Bxf6 would be better because of the threat of Rgx7 Kg8" ? That's how it displays in shredder for me, making it unusable to me.

It just reminds me of an annotated games collection.  BUT there is a solution in Shredder.  Just switch between notation and score sheet.  The score sheet just has the game moves (but can still take you through variations) and then switch back to notation if you want to read the annotations.

Has chess.com definitively stated 'game explorer' will never have this capability or db size?  Why don't we just start asking?  It may show up as a premium upgrade at some point.

Jazzist

feydaway: chess.com should definitely allow us to browse our live games as well in the game explorer. I can't understand why this isn't already avaliable.

Try getting a copy of Chess Base 9 or 10 at amazon or eBay. You might luck out and find a great deal like I did on CB 9. I've read CB 11 isn't stable and it isn't any better than CB 10, and you can update CB 9 or 10 with the most recent "Big DB" (3.5 million games or so) for about $60 and if that ain't enuff you can upgrade to the "Mega DB" (for a lot more than $60)

I've used the free DBs available here and at shredder and the ChessBase Big DBs and Mega DBs are way better.
