Mission Craft Solid Wood Chess Board Review - The Chess Store

Greetings.

After no luck finding any posts anywhere showcasing or reviewing this particular board, I decided to perform a leap of faith and purchase one. I have finally obtained one after eyeing this one for a while.

It is a simplistically magnificent and beautiful board. I recommend viewing these images in their original size.

Please note the coloring of the Maple squares may have slightly different coloring based on environmental lighting + HDR + angle and other tricks from the phone camera.

The board is essentially a borderless board that interlocks with the outer, laminated African Padauk frame to prevent warping. The playing squares appears as a thin 1/4 inch layer applied to the board like in many solid wood boards, but in reality it is almost an inch thick. Underneath the board you can see the the opposite site of the playing field.

It features a keyhole should someone decide to hang their board on a wall.

The Maple and Padauk textures are really beautiful. Boy do I love me some Padauk.

Those circles at each corner are decorative dowels to strengthen the mitered corners instead of screws and plates to maintain the old-world woodworking integrity. And the border features Maple inlay.

Negatives

With that being said, there are minor flaws which I don't consider significant but also would not expect for a board of this price range.

Small carving imperfections. Not terribly noticeable.

Alignment of the squares are not perfect, but also not too noticeable. Example:

In the above image, I reckon it would be generally accepted by the consumer, me included. However, if I am to be assiduously examining the alignments, I will find small amounts of imperfections. The four squares in the center of the above image are not perfectly aligned/sized.

These misalignments, which are low in quantity, are no more than half a millimeter of error. If any wood board experts or workers think this is a fatal error and should never be accepted, let me know below. I understand these boards can be labor intensive, and at the price of range, I, again, would not expect basic, common errors, and perhaps I may be unreasonable.  Personally and visually it does not bother me, as it is an imperfection that you will find with only amplified attention, but I'm curious to see what others think. I'm O.K. with this.

Final Thoughts

Thus far I am quite pleased with the purchase. Albeit not by any means cheap, even with discounts, I wanted to give Mission Craft the benefit of the doubt. My past experience with The Chess Store has been pretty positive. I'm happy to answer any questions. Cheers.

That board looks fantastic.  Thanks for taking the time to take some high quality and detailed pictures!

@GambitHawk: Agree with your assessments. Unfortunately, when you go to critique something in detail, the small imperfections take up more of the discussion and photos than they do when you see it in person - or than they should. I suspect that if you show the board to your guests, they will gush over it. I would hope none of your friends would pull out a jeweler's loupe before deciding if they like it happy.png

The imperfections would not bother me on a “normal” (less expensive) board, but at that price I would expect perfection.

At that price with theses flaws ?

Nice board! I hate misalignments but I think the one you showed is really minor. The carving imperfection is ok too. I had one similar issue on the box PithStudios made me. There was a slight "cut" on the top of one of the sides. It is visible when the box is opened.

@GambitHawk I think it all depends upon each person's perspective and what he/she can live with in terms of imperfections. For me, I hate misalignments. I wouldn't consider the one shown on your board as a misaligned square. I consider the one below as one. My expectation is the misalignment on your board will probably happen. The misalignment shown below should not at any price point.

I also think it depends upon the number of issues and the level of severity. If there are a few really minor issues, then no problem. If there are 5 big misalignments like the below board had, then that's when the quality of the build can be questioned. Of course, the price point matters. The higher the price the larger the expectation would be to have fewer issues of minor severity.

@GambitHawk If that's the case then I don't think that's a big deal at all.
