The Latvian fifties set...
The Latvian sixties set...
Originals from the sixties. Note the red tinge, as if the pieces were originally red, and then later refinished.
ChessBazaar's queens. They did a nice job reproducing the beautiful coronets of the originals, though with fewer notches...
Thanks Chuck for the nice review and pics of your CB Latvian set and its originals. Beautiful sets indeed! Have you left feedback on the CB site along with the sugestions for the antiqued boxwood and red & black versions? In the past, CB has made new versions based on customer feedback.
ChessBazaar has done a particularly good job of replicating the fifties Latvian knights...
From ChessBazaar...
The sixties set sports quite different knights. I think ChessBazaar was right to copy the fifties knights...

Thanks, Mike! And great suggestion.
Let me join rcmacmillan in praising this new reproduction offered by ChessBazaar. It's their best Soviet reproduction to date, faithful to the original design in most every detail, but enhanced to modern playing standards by increasing its size and weight.
Here are some more photos, along with some of Latvian sets from my collection for comparison. I hope ChessBazaar will offer the set in an antiqued version, as the fresh boxwood is too, well, fresh-looking; and in a red and black version, a color combination fairly common for this set.
