Wow. I am speechless, lol Seriously Chuck. Wonderful collection. While I really like them, I would prefer a cross on the king, and little nicer coronet for the queen, I am not saying I don't like them as is however. They are beautiful as they are. The design is definitely unique, and very artistic. Thanks for sharing Chuck.

Thanks, Ed. Non-cross finials are pretty common in Soviet and Eastern European sets. The coronets are simple. I find them elegant. Without sharp points, they're designed to survive bouncing around in the storage boxes that doubled as boards.

Eye candy, cgrau, eye candy. Thanks.

I absolutely agree that the set should be offered antiqued or red and black. It'd be a truer representation of the originals.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Chuck.  Chess Bazaar's reproduction is a pretty set. Smile

Your original sets seem to pawns and pieces with a wider ball to base ratio. Like you, I find the finials attractive, and the opposite color contrast on the bishops and kings really stands out.  And the knights..!  Jeez a knight posted on d5 is intimidating enough, but on this set..wow!

I hope to see more of the Eastern European sets at tournaments.

Thanks, Mark. It may be that CB's stems are proportionately thicker than the two originals I show here. I own a number of originals in addition to the 50s and 60s set, and I think that other than the larger scale of the CB pieces, they are aesthetically consistent with the style, rather than a bastardization  of the style, I criticism I think is fairly leveled at many of CB's "reproductions."

Wow, I just went to the site and saw the Labor Day Backorder sale.

I just ordered the set at $101.99!  That's $34.00 off the normal price listed on the site, great.

And the set does look really, really nice.

I'll be interested in your assessment of the set's playability, Ron.

I'm happy to share my opinion.

What size square do you think this set would work best on?

Avatar of cgrau
Ron, I'm trying it on a 2.375" Rechapados Ferrer board tomorrow night.
