My board is going to come with my Noj Dubrovnik II red stained set that I ordered earlier. This way I only pay the shipping for the set and the board comes along,...on board if you know what I mean.
My current playing set-up. Whats yours?

The pieces and box were my great grandfather's. Apparently, he took them with him on trips with the Canadian Merchant Navy in World War Two. The board is a $4 little beauty my wife rescued from a thrift store. The pieces might not be the exact size for the board but they're close enough for me.

Moriarty--the board and pieces look like they were made for each other. What an awesome heirloom. Might the board be a Jaques?

I'm not sure where it's from. There's a sticker on the back that says Bonatto & Cia Ltda. in Curitaba Parana (which is in Brazil). The back is particle board. With someone of the rubbing on the edges, I was wondering if it came out of a game table (where you swap in other games, like backgammon). If anybody has any guesses, let me know.
I'm was just happy my wife found it. She might not get my chess addiction but she's still willing to feed it from time to time. :-)
Until she found this, the best board I had for the pieces was a cheap vinyl one. This is a big improvement.

Hi Moriaty,
Your set reminded me of mine. This set was owned by my great grandfather. It was given to me be my great aunt (his daughter) before she passed away (97 years). It is slightly hybrid (different pawn sizes) but has had great wear, surviving young kids throughout its life.
thanks for posting

Do you think that globe on the white king was added later? What's the situation on the black one?
-Izmet

its interesting. The set has been like that since I was a child about 30 years ago.
The globe matches the wood and the patina of the king and of the other pieces. The poor black king has always been like that since I have known him. Overall the set has been amazingly durable as it lived in a draw in a plastic bag for about 25 years being regularly played with by numerous children
The board is hand made and has been with set all the time

It is very cool. I grew up in small country town so did realise boards came without being foldable! Will post a couple more photos of board

That's a cool set. It's got me wondering if any of the sets I own now will stand the test of time. I'm really about the only chessplayer in my family so if I hadn't taken the pieces, who knows where they would have wound up.

What a beautiful set. I'd so love to play with it.
Well, I am amazed. As I was convinced by the denizens of this forum, late Sunday evening. I went ahead and ordered one of the Best Chessmen Ever Stage 1 sets from the Best Chessmen Ever site. This is the one that Izmet has made in and it ships from India. It was a matter of a few clicks on PayPal and 149.99 Euros or $172 later, I had a set on order.
I got home rather late this evening and ordered wings and a pizza delivered. When the fellow came to the door there was a DHL package delivered just a bit earlier today.
And yes, it's the BCE, Stage 1 set, after only 3 days.
I just took the tape and packaging off and unwrapped a few of the pieces. The set came in a plastic box, just like the ones I have seen pictured on this forum of sets from Chess Bazaar.
So far the pieces look identical to the ones pictured on the site under "Special Offer".
Wow what Speedy Delivery Service!
