Need help identifying this set

Sort:
lnefzger

I received these chess pieces in 1972 as a gift from my parents. My mother was a fan of craft fairs, flea markets, thrift shops and the like. I am wondering if these pieces were a commercially available set (at the time) or perhaps a one off that she unearthed during her forays. They are certainly a classic looking staunton desjgn but I find the knights, though an interesting carving, to be out of proportion to the rest of the set.

Any help from

you learned collectors and historians will be appreciated.

they look portuguese to me

edit: they might be from Spain, but I'm still thinking Portugal.  My money is on one of those two.  Escardibul is a Spanish maker, their most prominent knight style is different, but may be worth looking up and seeing if you can find a similar set.

Looks like a French Dog Face Knight set. The King and Queen most definitely have a French design to them.

@ Inefzger, what a wonderful set.

Here is the post to help you out- from the same author, Arlindo Vieira, theonecalledMichael referred to: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/spanish-chess-sets-5-rarity-and

Read the story of the pieces from Vigo (if you haven't) and especially look at post #17.

Here is a second, more recent thread with sets from, probably, Vigo.
