Hi everyone

i have downloaded scid vs pc and am using it pretty often.i am liking it a lot but have some problems that i want to know can be solved or not?

i tried to google but no use.

so the problems are:

1. How to use stock fish engine's skill level feature in scid vs pc?

2.I want to setup a position and play it against my favourite engine.Is it possible?

3.How can I save my games of fics in pgn form for later review?I want to save them in a separate folder.

4.I want to setup a position and save it to a specific folder.

5.Also i want to merge a bunch of pgns into specific folder.

Any help plzzz.thank you

1)  Click TOOLS - ANALYSIS ENGINES.  Highlight your Stockfish engine from the list of engines and then click the configuration button (or whatever it's called - the icon is a wrench and a screwdriver) located at the bottom of the screen.  Edit these Stockfish options as desired.  (Note that one of the options is SKILL LEVEL.)

Note that each engine will have different options available for you to edit.

2)  Of course.  Click EDIT - SETUP BOARD.  Use this screen to setup the postion you want.  Be sure to set whose move it is.  If you're setting up a position and you want to play Black, set it up so that Black is at the bottom of the screen and when you're done, click INVERT and then TRANSPOSE.

AFter setting up the board, click PLAY - COMPUTER UCI ENGINE.  Select the engine you want to play against.  Set the time controls for each player.  Click PLAY when done.

3)  What GUI are you using when you play on FICS?  Some GUIs (WinBoard, for example) will automatically append the games you play to a pgn file of your choice, on your hard drive.

4)  There are lots of ways to do this.  One way is to setup a position as described above and then click EDIT - COPY FEN.  Then paste that FEN into a text file of positions using TextPad or Notepad.  A collection of positions, with the best move listed, is called a Test Suite, and they look something like this:

1k1r4/pp1b1R2/3q2pp/4p3/2B5/4Q3/PPP2B2/2K5 b - - bm Qd1+; id "BK.01";
3r1k2/4npp1/1ppr3p/p6P/P2PPPP1/1NR5/5K2/2R5 w - - bm d5; id "BK.02";
2q1rr1k/3bbnnp/p2p1pp1/2pPp3/PpP1P1P1/1P2BNNP/2BQ1PRK/7R b - - bm f5; id "BK.03";

These are the first three positions of the Bratko-Kopec test suite.

5) If the PGNs are all in the same folder, the absolute easiest way is to use the old DOS copy command.  COPY *.pgn allgames.pgn  This will merger all of the PGN files into a single pgn file, called allgames.pgn.

@MrEdCollins I use scid vs PC to play fics games.after it is over i click the save:add games option.but after i am unable to find the game pgn

MrEdCollins

Ah, you use Scid vs. PC.  I should have guessed that.  (I myself don't think it's the best GUI for FICS.)

The game pgn will be available in the PGN window.  (WINDOWS - PGN WINDOW.)

Once you're finished playing your games, you can click TOOLS and then EXPORT ALL FILTER GAMES - EXPORT FILTER TO PGN.  A window will open up asking if you wish to add the games to an existing file.  Check the YES option and then point to the file you wish to save it to.

(Note:  If EXPORT ALL FILTER GAMES initially isn't highlighted and a valid choice, I think you just click the clipbase to make that choice available.)
