A few things I don't like about this.  1) Glare during outside games is going to be an issue. 2) What if you get a call? You would have to put your phone on airplane mode every time you used it.

I think you just put it in airplane mode. I mean what do you do when you get a call during a game right now? I hope you don't take the call 🤣 ... turn the phone on airplane / do not disturb whether this or any other clock. dont talk and play.

The GUI seems very cool, I like the old analog look especially and it does seem well constructed.  The thing for me personally is about what role would it play. First off it's not a regulation clock and definitely not going to be allowed for Tournament play.  I and any tournament player already has to buy a regulation chess clock so this is not a cost saving alternative.  This clock would actually be an added cost.  With tournament use out we are left with this clock being used only for casual play.  Most of of my casual play is done outdoors and I don't need to tell anyone about phone use outdoors in direct sunlight.  So now for me its role is down to indoor use but not when I'm hike because as a tournament player I have a clock at home.  You can see how niche it's usage is becoming.  However to your point with using airplane mode you are correct that is a solution. I personally don't do that during casual play but that it is a solution. As to "don't talk and play" again this clock can't be used for tournaments so why not quickly pick up if the Mrs is calling?

@KineticPawn Very good points you raise. It's definitely a small niche market. Many (if not most) casual chess players don't use clocks. And if they want to experiment with chess clocks, there is a simple free one to download for their phone. Instead of chess clocks, casual players talk trash like: Move already! Geezus. OMG. There's nothing to think about, you only have one move. Goooo!!! Too weak. Too slow! You know, it's your turn, right? Haha! It's part of the fun. happy.png

Here in NYC, you DO NOT want to put your $1000 iPhone in a cradle on a park table. I hope you have your running shoes on to chase after it. LOL

With all that said, there are people who will buy the Tempest clock for whatever reason. No need for anyone to try and convince people into buying it (or not). You either want it or you don't. Similar to my Red&Black mousepad board. It's a very small niche group of people who want a retro, cheezy looking Red&Black. But I'm glad there was an option out there for me to create and purchase the Red&Black mousepad board.

I do like the GUI especially the old analog clock interface.

I agree it might never be approved for tournament play for obvious reasons, but that is not my call.  Even the current clocks can not have a port where the firmware can be updated over the internet by the owner as the program can be altered.

But I do like the GUI for sure, and if it comes to fruition I may buy one for use at the club for casual games.

It could be allowed for tournaments, flight mode. Nobody can seriously assume that you will use this smartphone for cheating during the game.

100%! anyone who thinks you could cheat with a phone in plain view isn't thinking it through. much safer in plain view and in airplane mode than in one's pockets. But the 'is it really in airplane mode'? question was just addressed too with a new Tournament Mode. Don't know if you saw that, but i'm wondering if TDs would be cool with it being just a display (once all phone functions are disabled, isn't it just a display?)  Check out Tournament Mode. Curious to hear from ACTUAL TD's on this TD-centric feature: Tempest Clock Tournament Mode

@MC818  there's a comparison video in one video between common clock (i don't know the brand) but it kind of negates the sound quality of the review to have a comparison with something that you are familiar with in the same video under same 'bullet' conditions. It's really good sounding and he takes it apart showing the dampeners you asked about - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecwj51qqmAo

Thanks for the link. I guess the loudness of the click depends upon how hard one pushes the lever down. I still think it is too loud. One thing that is good is the device is smaller than a clock. I can stuff my pieces and Tempest Clock into a smaller bag.

So it’s $10 for the chess clock app and $25 for the plastic and leather cradle.

There’s been a market for game clocks since iphone and android apps became a thing. This is the first time for me to see such an app be sold with a physical accessory.

Everything looks ready to go. Why does the Kickstarter page have a target date of 1/2022?  I really like the analog look with all the modern features. I do hope they approve it for USCF tournaments. Good luck with the project.

Hello everyone!

I have just come across this post and I felt obliged to comment since I have actually used this and feel like I have a few things to say. My friend introduced it to me. I was skeptical at first, for all the reasons that people have named here (phone malfunctioning or flying out), but since I hadn't spent money on it, I decided to give it a shot. Here are my impressions:

1) The material the clock was made of is actually high quality. I am a bit of a weirdo and like smelling stuff (books in particular) and this is high quality leather.

2) The bottom part sticks to the table so the clock doesn't move around, even if there is a tense blitz battle (we had one quite a few times).

3) The click is not loud and the sound is actually quite satisfying.

4) I was really curious about whether Tempest can really hold the phone tightly so whilst my friend was preparing snacks and drinks, I quickly took Tempest and turned it upside down (it wasn't my phone in there hehe). And guess what? It actually held the phone! I was quite impressed with that.

5) From what I have read about it, it is not meant to be used in proper tournaments. It is just a cool thing to use in friendly games.

6) It doesn't take up as much space as a normal clock would.

7) Time controls are very flexible and very easy to set.

8) There is actually an option to get a Chess960 set up! I loved it.

All in all, I think it is a really cool gadget to have. Of course, not everyone will like it, but from my experience as a skeptic, I couldn't find anything I disliked.

Does anyone know what happened to this? It's an app and a platform and people were testing it a while back. I no longer see any hype on it. I thought it was supposed to be available by now. Did they run into any problems?

Kickstarter funded it in first 48 hours.
Sold out first production run.
Next production run (including a walnut deluxe version) is due next month January according to the website: tempestclock.com
