New Chessnut project

I found this on the HIARCS forum

https://evo.chessnutech.com/

I like the idea and the look.

Are you kidding me ? What is the need of an "embedded" smartphone/tablet for an online chessboard ? That's nonsense. What is the square size ?

Rsava

Looks pretty slick.

Wonder what the price point will be.

Drawgood
When everyone has a phone and access to all engines and games it seems somewhat pointless to have a digital board with a screen. But I may be wrong

I guess its for people who have the $$$ , here s a video of it .

They have Chestnut Air and Chestnut Pro if you don't want an embedded computer.

Event DGT offers Centaur (w/ embedded computer) and Pegasus (w/o embedded computer). I would prefer a large display compared to the Centaur.

Perhaps the software will be available for standalone use with their other products.

I think it will be 399 with a normal price of 699. That works out to the 43% off they are advertising.

Hi, i new here. I need practice.

$799 MSRP ($459 early bird offer) !!!!! Certabo's 45mm (Aurora Brown and Aurora Black) with BT module and DGT's Bluetooth E-board are cheaper and a far better option wink

chessmaster_diamond

This is basically an old-fashioned chess computer with up-to-date electronics. I'd say it's a better solution than either the DGT Centaur (no connections, no online playing) or the Millennium King Performance (outdated electronics), but the price strikes me as excessive.

How do you know it is a better option? The Chessnut option has not been released yet. How can you make a comparison to something you have no experience with?

Here’s a video showing the unit in use:

https://youtu.be/NRRlZ4RELV8

If I understand correctly, the unit “reads” the tablet screen and translates that to the physical board. This should mean anything that works on Android should be playable on the EVO. That’s some tremendous versatility if true. The price feels a bit high, but I think consumers have gotten spoiled by low cost Android products, but Chessnut isn’t going to have the economies of scale to drive down price. By comparison, Millennium is charging $1200 for their Mephisto unit. (though I don’t know how direct that comparison is). Of course anything there will always be questions about long term support for anything running on Android.
I like the physical look of the EVO, but I’d hope user will have the option to use other pieces.

Katzenpapa always makes good videos, thanks @Bodycarts for posting that.

The interface looks good. It plays well, easy to grab a game. I like that it is a self contained unit.

I have the Chessnut Air (along with most of the other "connected" boards, 4 different ones total) and have had some success playing with it. Not sure if it has been my devices or the board.

If I can grab one of these at the $459 price I will give it a hard look.

AlexiZalman

Certainly looks sweet, but they would need to add more training and game-analysis features to justify the price. You would have thought with all the talk about AI they would produce a truly smart tutor like computer, but nope.

Have you ever heard of any "critical point" from katzenpapa and others about any chessboard whatsoever they reviewed ? Any "sticking" point ? Isn't there one, really ? Nothing bad ? Actually, despite the integrated "infrastructure" of the EVO, nothing is new under the sun, just a higher price for nothing truly worthwhile wink

Clrdk

Yes, offcourse, you have to make you own conclusion. It is another way to go, but I like the ideas with this board so far, integration with chess.com and chessable.com

Can you give us your impressions after using the board?

How do the pieces feel to you?

How does the board feel to you? Does it feel heavy to you?

Is the game play fast to you?

How does this board compare to the other electronic boards you own?

Can you post your videos on your testing and comparison?

As far as I know, DGT E-boards owners still can’t play with chess.com bots because of API limitations. DGT Pegasus owners still can’t play on chess.com with their iOS devices. Other smart boards brands situation isn’t much better.

So let’s be honest - compatibility with 3rd party apps and web platforms is still the biggest issue for all other competitors.

What we have with Chessnut EVO - is additional visual “Image recognition” technology with huge potential in terms of compatibility. Beside standard Lichess & Chess.com without limitations, it at pre-release stage already compatible with Chessable.com, Chesskid.com, various 3rd party applications. And this list will continue to increase.
