They look sweet! Can't wait to get mine. :)
New design of BCE magnetic chessboards
Yes, I agree. I just ordered one. Izmet was very nice and suggested it ship with the set I already have ordered from Noj to save on shipping costs. So I'll get them both together.
I ordered the greenish blue board.
Price? Ordering info?
There's a link in the first post to his blog where he lists the price and tells you to email him if interested. It's not exactly mass production...
No one is mentioning the price? Anyways how is it constructed? It is a print ontop of a fiber board? Looks like a very good idea especially for a club, looks like a heavy duty wear board. I watched the video, can someone who owns this board elaborate a bit?
Euro today is down to $1.07 lowest since it came out I beleive. Just a while ago it was $1.50 to 1 Euro.
Does anyone know what the board is made of? When I looked at the video it looked like presss board they used to use for kids puzzles that might have a print laminated on top?
I won't comment on price etc. Sure everyone will have their own opinion on that. I will say that I really like the concept. I own one of the prototypes which were handmade and look a little different (thicker, no border, straight cuts, different colours, painted rather than printed) and for travel it's really great. Almost no weight, fits in a little bag, and you get to play on a nice-looking wooden board rather than a vinyl roll-up board. Way cooler than the usual fold-up wooden boards...
Concerning the price, in this case you are not paying for the materials, but for the innovative design and tiny production run. Getting those magnets aligned can't be easy.
As for how they are made, previously I thought they were plywood, but from the photos it looks more like some kind of particle board. According to blog post linked in the OP, the colors are printed and coated with shellac. The board weighs 880 grams and has 55 mm squares (almost 2.25").
I own two prototypes. One Izmet named "Ingrid" and is hand-made personally by him. It's spray-painted on thin plywood, then shellaced. The second is from the trial run of the printed versions, but lacks the logo. It's also thin plywood. They're both wonderful. It's a brilliant idea, and the boards travel well. I'll try to post some pictures this coming weekend.
Here's a quick phone snapshot of my brand new Noj BCE stage 1 walnut and maple chessmen on the new bordeaux BCE board:

I couldn't be happier. The pieces are absolutely spectacular (truly the Best Chessmen Ever) and the board is absolutely perfect for them.
Hopefully I'll find the time in the near future to post a more detailed review with better pictures.
PS: ifekali, I tried to email you yesterday (with this same picture) but Google reports that your account is receiving too many messages at the moment and that new messages are blocked temporarily.
Bordeaux red and greenish blue only, but made in Slovenia :) This batch sports a BCE website URL and improved edge-to-edge printing. More info and pics on my blog.
