First - I hate you. And I mean that in the most loving way possible ...
Second - that is a stunning board. I will have to go on the wish list.
Did you get a new set to go with it?

LOL. No, didn't get a set, just the board. I'm on a waiting list for a NOJ Tal set, and am trying to force myself to not buy any more sets until that one is made early next year...
Hey Frank, what set is that you have set up there?
I'm a little embarassed to admit that I'm not sure. It's one of the Official Staunton replica sets, and I have two, don't recall which one. Never quite figured out the differences between the 1849, the 1850 and the 1851. All I recall is that this one was introduced as featuring the "new antiquing" process. Given that Carl probably still follows the discussion here, perhaps we can jump in to say which model this is.
did some digging - this was branded at the time as the Official Staunton 1849 set - a little different then the current set using that name, though, I think. For starters, no manufacturer's mark on the King's base...
I really like the combination of veneers; very sumptuous. I'm not sure what I think of the raised, narrow frame, but that's a matter of personal taste.
I also got the new board, with my 1849 Staunton set. I am lukewarm about the board: I do not care for the raised frame and the board is too dark for my taste. (Perhaps I will swap with someone for a more modern board.). I like the set though.
Yes, just a matter of taste. I like to look at the wood, not the frame. Also, I like new, and not old. My first purchase of a nice set, so I am learning through experience.

Hi Steve ..happy to exchange the board for you......
I just received my copy of Carl's new board, and I think it's stunning. The craftsmanship is outstanding, the choice of veneers beautiful, and the overall design gorgeous and evocative of the old-style Jaques boards. This is a perfect fit for any club size vintage Jaques replica.
I own around 20 wooden boards ranging from standard tournament boards to vintage Jaques boards and custom-built expensive hardwood boards. This one rules them all. A total winner.
(and in case I get accused of shilling: I paid for this board, and did so gladly, because this board is exactly what I've been looking for).
Here's a few quick pics taken in poor lighting due to this being a rainy day. I can take better pics if anyone wants on the weekend.
here is an original board.. circa 1890 ...ours is a very close reproduction
Carl, this is just a stunning setup. Your reproduction is so close it is simply amazing.
I, too, did not necessarily care for the raised edge but the more I look at it as a piece of history the more I want it.
The pieces and board are on my list. Now if I can just get a break on the large, unexpected expenses coming at us ...
