After several months away from my chess collecting hobby, I went to the chess-museum.com website to look up some information.  I was quite shocked to see this message:

NICHOLAS LANIER (1954-2019)

Nicholas Lanier, who ran this website over the years with great passion and expertise, suddenly passed away on March 26, 2019. Chess Collectors International deeply regrets the loss of one of its most dedicated members. In collaboration with the Swiss Museum of Games, we will make sure that Nicholas' website continues to be maintained in his honour as an important source of information.

Michael Wiltshire, president CCI
Dr. Thomas Thomsen, former president CCI
Gero Jung
Prof.tit. Dr. Ulrich Schädler, Director of the Swiss Museum of Games
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  Although I didn't know Nicholas personally, I read his website and papers with great interest.  I could easily lose an hour or more just browsing through his website looking at the pictures of historical chess sets from all over the world.  I certainly would not have been able to purchase Czech chess pieces or appreciate my Nekvasil Vienna Coffee House chess set without his research and desire to share whatever information that he found.  It is of some consolation that the information that Nicholas collected will be continue to be available to us.
So, goodbye Nicholas, and thank you for everything.
