@zagryan I think You misunderstood me. I am very happy with my set. I know hand carved pieces will not be perfect as a cnc made one, and yes that is the charm, I like it to a certain extent. What I mentioned is that the video is all about the knight is so hard to make symmetrical that a carver can make only a couple a day, and it is the reason for the high price.
2021 Official FIDE World Chess Set.

@dobtom Oh, I see. Great to hear you’re happy with your set. Regarding the video, yes that’s funny, now that I think about it. The price would have been even higher had they carved the knight perfectly symmetrical.
On a side note, the narrator in the Business Insider video mentions that the knight of the championship chess set is “designed to look like a realistic horse head… Each carving is intentional, from the hair on a knight's tail to the curve of its neck.” And I was thinking, “They’ve carved a horse’s tail!?”

@lotsoblots No wonder why they go out of stock so quickly. It’s because enthusiasts like you are buying two sets per size :-)
But aren't the set and board actually used in the World Championship DGT-enabled? There is also this: https://youtu.be/-Tg9xiJ6D6k?t=333
quoting my previous post so it is not forgotten about, my confusing has not yet been cleared up.

Then why is the set labeled as "2021 Official FIDE World Chess Set." not DGT-enabled?
I think a reasonable argument can be made that it *is* the same set of pieces. The only difference is that DGT, upon receipt of the pieces, fills the bottom with weight and a coil whereas World Chess, the producers of the pieces, fills the bottom strictly with weight. Just as I can buy these "official" sets knowing that they won't *actually* be used by Magnus and Nepo, I can buy them knowing that FIDE would have DGT install their own coils in them before the matches begin.

@Warbler ChessHouse has the DGT board and DGT FIDE World Championship pieces. It'll run you about $1500 for the set. If you send them an eMail, they'll hook you up.
You can get a DGT Board and the weighted FIDE pieces from Schach Niggemann for less than $900 USD, including shipping from Germany to the US.

People say this, yet I can never find the pieces on their site. Direct links?

It's great to see that some of the members here are enthused about the FIDE World Championship chess pieces so much so that they go the extra step of obtaining the higher priced DGT enabled pieces even though they may or may not own a DGT board. What intrigued me about the DGT enabled pieces were that they were found to be lighter than the non-DGT pieces. However, a DGT dealer in Poland carries two versions of DGT FIDE WC chess pieces. One is weighted and the other is unweighted. I wonder if the pieces members here have purchased are the unweighted version. Here are the two links:
- DGT Official FIDE set Weighted
- DGT Official FIDE set Unweighted

@zagryan Mine are weighted. Chess House advertises them as weighted and the box marks them as weighted.

@lotsoblots Thanks for the clarification. Your photo above shows how DGT use the same box for all their products and at the same time distinguish them using a simple black circular sticker. That's neat.

What I find interesting (as @Pawnerai has pointed out in the past) is that there appears to be variation in the neckline with these sets (among other minor variations). I wonder if Chess House is still possibly selling the 2013 variant of the set...their site *does* explicitly say 2013:
My DGT set's (and studio set's, fwiw) knight looks closer to that knight.
Now here is the image from the polishchess site from @zagryan:
This second image is nearer in design to my non-DGT World Chess set. Very interesting, I like them both, but out of curiosity I'm going to ask World Chess about it directly.

I think it was the design chess. The knight neck from the second image has almost the same proportions as the knights in the Academy Set (plastic).

Yes. As I noted in post #20 of this thread, Niggemann is an excellent option. If one is comfortable with placing an overseas online purchase have at it. DGT is an EU company, so it makes sense that products are cheaper over there. Now, I don't know forum member Warbler, but for someone with pretty basic questions and located in the US I would suggest contacting ChessHouse. Preferably by phone to get any DGT questions and concerns answered.
@lotsoblots Here's a direct Niggemann link. If you click on the "Learn More" tab, there is a chart with all the weights and measurements of each piece as well. https://www.niggemann.com/en/chessmen-fide-official-set-weighted.html
I live in in the US and have purchased two weighted DGT sets from Schach Niggemann with no problems. Below is my weighted FIDE set (my other set is the DGT classic pieces). They are a reputable vendor. Each set was shipped quickly and their price was much lower than from any US vendor I could find.
@d4nf6 very nice, and in package with the board, it is expensive but not that bad. How do you find the classic set compared to the fide set (weight, size, quality, playing experience etc)? Can I ask for a picture with both sets?
Just to show how good Niggemann is, they put my black pieces in a seperate box (only the white pieces were in the dgt box), and all pieces including the pawns were wrapped in foam.
@zagryan Agreed wholeheartedly. World Chess's support is unmatched in my opinion. These are premium priced sets and the after-sales support certainly reflects that. The studio pieces + folding board combo just came back up for pre-order this morning and, even though I already have the studio piece set, I'm actually considering buying the combo since I respect their company so much and love their products. I have full confidence they'll make it right if I get a dud or two or something I receive isn't quite to my liking.
