The more I look at their site the more errors I find, so there's no way to know what they really have.  What a mess!

dobtom

Based on the broadcost of the first game, definitely the slim version is used.

A little side note:   Sometimes my dgt board misplaces the move I make, very rare occasion, but still frustrating. As I watched the streaming when Magnus moved in the opening Rook B8, all the live streams showed rook c8 and then they realised the actual move was different. Giri commented that out of all the dgt boards, they managed to pick a faulty one happy.png

There was a chat commenter that said if you slide the pieces rather than pick up, move, then put down the DGT board is more likely to mis-read the move.  Ah, the joys of technology!

Melkor_14

Yes, what they use is the dgt version, so, slightly slim knight. Quick question, is that dgt board walnut or rosewood? Because the version posted here was slightly different from what I see in the transmission, but not sure if that is just my eyes...

dobtom

I think the walnut version.

lotsoblots

Yeah, it's walnut which is great for me because I have pedestrian tastes and that's my favorite. wink.png I love seeing these pieces in action.

Yes. It's the Walnut DGT board. The Rosewood (and Wenge) board has notations on the sides. The boards are made with wood veneers, so there are slight variations in the wood grain and color shade from different production runs.

...and yet it will still miss moves if you don't use what it considers proper technique.

Can we have more pictures of the WC set on 50mm-square board? happy.png I am still wondering if I should just not buy the 87%-size studio set for my WC board…

@zbieraj Here are shots with the Championship and Studio sets on the 50mm square board. The position is from today's match.

I hope this helps!

Great photos - I like a bit more space on the board and thus, the studio set looks easier to ‘see’ if that makes any sense.

@Lotsoblots Your photos reminds me of my setup. I use all of my 3.5 and 3.75" sets on my 2.25" boards. The Collectors has a king base of 1.7" while some other sets like Cooke sets have a 1.6" king base. The thinnest of the bunch is the Chavet size 5 which only has a 1.375" base. Your Studio set looks just like Chavet size 5 on my 2.25 boards. It always takes me a day or two to adjust to the increase or decrease in space when swapping between sets.

It is interesting. I mean my German Knight Timeless set (3,75”) looks kind of perfect on the 50mm squares. But WC FIDE set (100%) is slightly larger and wider than typical 3,75” sets. I mean my Academic plastic set does not feel that big, although that is a 100% copy of the wooden set. If WC could make the studio set triple weigthened as well (as they do in the full size set)…

zbieraj

Quick example from my side - my WC Academic (plastic) set (100% size) vs my German Knight Timeless (3,75”).

Current Magnus vs. Nepo situation in round 2.

It goddamit… For me and my personal use, I think that the ergonomics of WC FIDE Championship set are second to none. And I am at this point comparing the plastic WCA set to wooden, well known set, which I love. I have played it on tournaments when I was young. I have them now after returning to the game after 15+ years of break. But again… goddamit, Pentagram made ultimate ergonomic set with superb design…

Does anyone feel these will become future collectors items? I'm looking to purchase my first "nice" chess pieces which carry significance and I'm looking between something like this, or searching out something like a used Chavet set.

FWIW, I really like the look of worn pieces with the "Patina of Time" on them. Not sure if these would someday develop that characteristic with extended use.
Thoughts? Advice?

@zbieraj

What board is this? Awesome! Do you have this with WC Championship pieces (wooden)?

It is World Chess Board (Rosewood and Maple). I made a review of it here:

I think both sets look good. Neither looks as off as my Chavet size 5 with a 1.375" base on a 2.25" square. But you're right the German knight set looks a little better than the WC plastic set.

I have an interesting development in the World Championship Chess Set Knight situation that I'd like to report on. happy.png As I previously documented in comment #81, the knights from my World Chess Championship Set (not the Studio Set) differed from those of my DGT FIDE set (as sold through Chess House). The World Chess knights are, among other differences, thicker in the neck with a gradual curve while the DGT knights have narrower straighter necks...more similar to the photography I've seen of past World Championship and Candidates matches.

In each of these sets, I may have mentioned that there were some relatively minor flaws (wobble, tool marks, missing paint/ebony color in spots, chipped pawn, etc.) across a total of 5 pieces. Both World Chess and Chess House (supporting on behalf of DGT) sent out zero-hassle replacement pieces almost immediately after I emailed them. By now those pieces have all now arrived and (building up suspense) You Won't Believe What Happened Next!

The situation has reversed itself! The DGT replacement knight has a more gradual slope while the World Chess replacement knights have the thin straight neck.

DGT:

World Chess:

Very interesting times. Based on all the news articles and statements about the limited number of highly skilled carvers allowed to produce these pieces I'm surprised to see such variation in what is the single most bold and iconic piece in the set. Perhaps there's simply one carver who feels VERY strongly about his implementation choices and he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. wink.png Or, perhaps we're destined to never know Daniel Weil's *true* intentions, especially when considering the Academy Set's mold design!

Anyway, I love both styles and both sets but, if I was going to buy another or if I was to make a recommendation to someone who feels strongly about one variation over the other, I think I'd ask the seller first if they could ensure that I'd get the particular style desired at that time.
