I purchased today a similar set (but knights with glass eyes) in Bern, Switzerland, for $10,-
The knights are somehow too bulky, but the set is nice, weighted, very playable. 
Old French set?

This set was owned by Milt Meyer, many times Sacramento champion in the 1940s/50s. His wife said it was the set he used the most. It is fairly small, king is 2-7/8". The box says "Made in France" on the bottom, the board has no markings and the sides are painted black. I'm assuming this was a common set back then - anyone know anything about it?
