Old Staunton chess pieces

I took some pictures at my friend´s place some years ago and saw them recently in my Pc. According to him the set is from around 1900, more then 100 years old and also the "board".

Pieces look spectacular and possibly collectible. What is the board made of?

Didn´t look like wood, more like massive carton! But the owner claimed it was as old as the pieces. It was nice to play with those pieces, i would guess the king was 85 mm.

The board actually looks like leather.

Looks to me like a "Possibly Ayers" set from the 19th century with a leather folding board of similar vintage, possibly from Jaques.

the board looks like a copy of the folding Leuchars leather boards that came in red/white and green/white. I agree w/ Chuck on the set being "possibly Ayers".

I actually heard this set and probably the board was part of a gift from Daniel Willard Fiske to Iceland, he gave several sets to Icelanders around 1900.

It is a worn FH Ayres  as I have a 4.4 king chess set sitting on my coffee table .
