Opinion from experts on Chavet (?) set

Hi,

For a long time I've been watching the threads with all the beautiful vintage chess pieces being posted here, but never owned one myself.   I have a number of newly made sets (nothing fancy) but they never quite scratched that itch.    Now that my eldest son is starting to play some chess, I went on a mission to get myself a nice vintage set.

This week I stumbled upon a local offering with what I believed could be an old Chavet size 5.  I didn't bother verifying the size and immediately messaged the seller.

Here are some pictures of the set I picked up this morning.  Sorry if they are not too clear but it's really difficult to capture the details on the black pieces:

When I got home I immediately measured the king: 93-94mm height with a 38 mm base which would make it a size 6?
Pieces have no cracks at all but enough smudges and a small dent here and there.  I think they are weighed although they have a very light feel and have felts (although I suspect they might have been refelted at some point).

I'm not sure if this is the real deal since I haven't seen that many black (varnished?) Chavet's in the forum till now.    Hoping the experts here can shed some light on what is sitting on my board right now?   Dare I hope on a very lucky find?  There was no box with the pieces so no ref number or anything.   The elderly lady stated she had seen the set at her own inlaws so I suspect it has quite some age.

Thank you for any info you could provide!

Looks like the app removes all formatting... Sorry about that

@BrownishGerbil  The latest update to the chess.com app on my iPhone removes formatting and multiple photos. It's a real pain. Everything appears fine on a desktop browser. By they way, the set looks like a Chavet to me! Nice find!

+1 on everything @Pawnerai stated. Good pieces and broken app.

Great older Chavet set, looks like the real deal to me.  The knight style and lacqured finish seem to indicate an older set.  The bishops in particular look like size 6 style.  Congratulations on a your find!

Whoa that's great to get that confirmation! Thank you for the replies!  Being from the seventies would make it my age... but it still has its looks hah.

Is there any info available on what the type indication they used at that time or are they in line with the refs from later sets? Other than what can be found on this forum, not much info is readily available online

Beautiful set. I don't know enough about Chavet sets to add my voice as confirmation of it being the real deal, but it's an awesome set.

Im really struck at the similarities between the same period Chavet and Lardy sets, the notable differences being the Knights and the bishop tops. They were competitors yet they shared designs?

The companies occupied the same town in the Jura — Dorian. Lardy was founded in the 1890’a, and Chavet in 1912. The were competitors, but as in any small region, they wound up sharing craftsmen and resources, so it’s really not too surprising that they wound up sharing some designs. I have Lardy sets with Chavet bishops, and Chavet sets with Lardy knights. I been collecting sets for almost fifty years, and prior to the 1970’s, Lardy dominated in terms of sheer quantity, but with the onset of the Indian and Chinese production, Lardy shrank, then went bankrupt. Chavet is, somehow, still limping along. Since many of both companies sets were sold to resellers for private labelling, it can be impossible to identify these sets as anything other than “French.”

@madmacsback thanks for the explanation, that makes a lot of sense now. I really love the french style sets, they're not as ornate as the luxury Indian sets, but they have an unassuming charm and character that makes them so appealing.

And they are reasonably inexpensive compared to the better Indian sets, and in general, better quality than the cheap Indian sets!

Super, I'll make a note and keep that with the pieces!

@madmacsback I can surely attest to your pricing statement.  I'm almost embarassed, but I've only paid 60€ for this set, which barely gets you a basic wooden set in today's inflation of prices.

@MCH818   Thank you for the links to the threads, what a wealth of info and gorgeous sets!
