Opinion needed on color combination

I'm curious what you guys preferences are regarding color chessboards when it comes to this pieces, it's SC antiqued color. The chessboards are all 50mm boards. The white balance is fixed afterwards in photoshop so it's as good as it gets the same for all of them.

I'm not quite out yet which one I like the most. What say you?

Edit: All boards are vintage except board nr 4, that's a modern one (walnut). For comparison I added a vintage walnut (board 5) and the difference is obvious to see between new and old.

I like the third one from the top and bottom.

No.4 for me Mike.

No.3 was a close 2nd tho- didn't like the rest tbh. Beautiful pieces btw

I just realized something looking at the comparison, number 4 is the only modern chessboard (walnut), the rest are vintage. And you pick the only modern one happy.png Thanks buddy!

@mister TEG3 ah ok, it's because of the boarders. I thought first it's the vibes because I see different vibes coming from old boards.

@mister Tank I guess it's the most contrasty combo I think?

TheOneCalledMichael

No worries buddy, I first didn't like boards without borders too, then mister MCH818 came along showing his boards without boarders. He's evil I'm telling you, evil!

I like the #2 the best.  I tend to prefer lower contrast and also vintage boards.  The pieces definitely stand out the most on #4.

KineticPawn

I like them all but I think #1 and #2 are my favorites.  I think the room it's in and other factors like natural light vs light bulbs could change possibly change my view but I just picture that set up as classic looking and being played in a home office or an old school chess club like in those old pictures.

Ah yes about that Paul Morphy set, would you like me to showcase some setups so you can finally make up your mind? You know, my daughter is faster when she decides what to wear for to go out then you to decide to buy the PM set. Trust me, that says a lot!

TheOneCalledMichael

Yes I agree, these pieces just have that classical looks that would come into its own at such settings you described mister K. That's why I've been looking at real vintage boards like Jaques boards and I've seen the prices...uhm..let's say I'd like to try first with ones that are way less expensive wink.png

I’ll take what’s behind door numbers 1 & 4.

Love the subtle color shifts in the grain of the light colored maple squares in #1. Looks almost like a watercolor painting.

You might want to check the white balance in #4. It looks a tiny bit cooler than the others.

TheOneCalledMichael

Board 1 is quilted maple, thankfully it doesn't have that strong 3D effect (anymore?).

That WB from #4 is weird right? I've applied the same WB as the others twice to make sure I'm not mistaken but it still comes out like that.

I like #4 the best. #1 is nice too.

I prefer #4. Not even close by my tastes.

@TheOneCalledMichael.... I think I might come back to this thread and change my mind - it is a close run race for me...4 pipping 3 in a photo in the finish line... with 5 entered in the wrong race - I have a feeling 5 could be my favourite if not for the distraction of the rank and file markings ... so, 4 ... but if I saw them in real life I might be taken with the aged quality of 3 matching the antiqued set... interesting stuff - thanks for posting.

Interesting, it seems like the subdued "modern" style #4 board edges out the "vintage" style boards. Too bad I don't have many old and modern boards to make a comparison. Maybe someone with extensive boards collection could do this? Me personally I edge more for #2 when it comes to classical look pieces.

TheOneCalledMichael

mister Sound! I'm quite sure you have the same setup as #4, same pieces and board that is tongue.png

TheOneCalledMichael

yes walnut, RF economic board (thin boarder).

I'm new here, so I will be careful. I love antique wood anything as I have worked with wood a long time. No. 1 and 2 are nice from the antique standpoint; but the wood grain runs the wrong way for me.  Way too much contrast in No. 3 for my old eyes. No. 5 is too distracting with the rank and file notation. Which leaves No. 4 as my favorite because it has just the right amount of contrast between light and dark, the border is not distracting and the balance of the colors between board and pieces is just right. All in all the choices are really nice.

TheOneCalledMichael

No worries mister F1, your thoughts are appreciated. I also prefer grains running from bottom to top. I think walnut/maple is the preferred combo for the majority here, as do I. Would love to find an old walnut board somewhere happy.png

Mister Michael, thank you for your kind response. I currently have only one board, an antique, which I made in high school wood shop class in 1965. Walnut and ash, 2 inch squares with the grain running the "correct" direction, i.e. in the direction of play. It has a 4 inch border in ash. There is a new wood project in the works for a new board with Peruvian walnut and maple, 2.25 inch squares.
