I don't know which book to which you refer but there is a good article on the subject on Wikipedia.  The subject is really important,  the structure dictating the strategies of both players.  I found my game really got better only when I put the structure first and starting considering each pawn as important rather than expendable elements.

I have a copy of Pawn Structure Chess by Andy Soltis. It's a great book. Be sure of reading with a chessboard next to you.

I highly recommend the book by Soltis. A good way to go about study is to play out opening variations that you have studied while looking through the different sections of the book to see what themes are important in your favorite openings. I definitely suggest reading through the whole book, though, and not just picking sections that you see commonly. Orejano made a good call with the advice of having an analysis board set up. You should probably do this with every chess book you read, though.

I checked out the wikipedia article. It is pretty good, but kindof just seems like a summary of the Soltis book.

I picked a copy of this book up a while back. Its pretty cheap and definatley worth checking out. Not all of the chapters may interest you as much as each other but you will learn more with this kind of book than buying 'yet another!' opening book.
