Haha! I’m in! But the sellers won’t cooperate. I look and look and it is not there yet.

Btw, I just realized your MOM clock has a dark non-white face too. Do you know why some were like ours while a lot of MOM clocks had white faces?

Smoke , lots of chess players smoked  back then ,  Guess it just years of being exposed to tobacco & smoke . grin

magictwanger

Who smoked tobacco?wink

PDX_Axe

Back in the day, namely the 60's and 70's, people simply didn't realize or care about the dangers of smoking.  Chess clubs were dark rooms full of smoke from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes.  The result was a brown film on just about everything.  In the 80's I would go to a bar in Waikiki and when I got home my shirt would reek of cigarette smoke, as smoking was still allowed in public places then.  People smoked on airplanes, in movie theaters, restaurants, wherever.  And that brown film gives your antique chess pieces and clocks a look we nicely call patina, rather than dirty.  Kind of gross, but it does make your items look more like the antiques they are.  My clock on the other hand, looks so new that people might think it's a reproduction rather then a vintage clock.

Wait, I'm confused...is there a rule against having 2 clocks?  Nothing wrong with having one of each that I can see.  thumbup

No , Why not ! Only thing is " have you not notice " how mid century craftsmanship is now at a very high asking price + shipping costs / Partly due to the QG fad + plus stuff is just not made like this anymore ,

Igor has a collection of broken clocks to harvest OEM vintage replacement parts from. I'm assuming your darker clock face was swapped in from an EXTREMELY well-loved chess clock in his inventory. Awesome clock, it's got great character!

This thread has been very helpful. I just went to the virtual museum and it seems that my recently acquired clocks are indeed very early BHB clocks housed in Bakelite! Late 50’s early 60’s. Cool. 👍😊

I'm glad that the site was useful for you.  I never see such treasures around where I live, and I don't get out all that often either, so I have to do most of my shopping online.  I like it when people post images and links to other websites here on the forum, as it gives people an idea of what is out there, and also provides information on further places to explore.

I think this forum is an excellent resource. I started my “five knights” thread to pay back what I had learned before buying my first chess set. I am no professional just an amateur trying to add diversity to the discussion. Be assured too - living on this island continent that I do - we don’t get heaps of opportunities to buy old stuff … I feel Europe/Eurasia is the epicentre …in Australia I feel a million miles away and oddly… I don’t mind the distance …. and it makes the interesting and rarer finds a tad more satisfying too.👍

Dang MCH you beat me to it...i saw it too...i love the stripe Ruhle Garde clocks.   Nice snipe lol

Yeah Igor is 100% reliable, I keep an eye on his ebay store all the time waiting for another treasure, but I slept on that clock because (confession time) I just bought 3 artsy modern sets from Chessbazaar.  I got a Bauhaus, a Hermann Ohme, and a Poni set, at 40% off...so 3 sets for like $160...I'm so weak lol

Oh and if you ever need storage, The Chess House sells boxes for like $7 that are nice and sturdy cardboard.   I just happen to have 3 empty ones under my table waiting to be filled.
