Plano 3700 boxes for set storage

I've heard that some people use these clear plastic boxes to store their sets. Does one box hold the entire set, or just the white or black pieces? Are these boxes working well for anyone?

TundraMike

Hi again, you seem to be going down the same route I have taken. I use Plano 3700 series DEEP PROLATCH STOWAWAY 4-15 adjustable compartments.

14"L x 9.13"W x 3.25"H

Why I like these? Inexpensive, provides a great seal where you can put a Bovedo pouch in that controls humidity both ways.  If you want you can also put foam in the compartments to take up the space but I do not do that. I just handle them with care. I ordered mine from Amazon Prime. I also keep the original packaging of the chess set if it comes with form fitted foam in case I would have to transport them one day which I hope I never have to do.

I did find a cigar box at Goodwill which can also be used and looks fancy because of the nice finish but as a practical box I never have found anything in the price range to beat the Plano.

Jut make sure you do not order a box that is too short in height. I do see some now that are totally waterproof sealed with o-rings but haven't taken a look at the dimensions.

This is he exact one O have been ordering ut you my find a different size better for you.

Information......just last year the price of these were $6.57 , I bought a few. I see the price has increased. Still worth the price I feel.

Wiscmike, do you have a whole set in one of those boxes, or do you need two boxes (one for black, one for white)?

TundraMike

I have a whole set in one box. The Q & K of course you have to lay flat, the other pieces usually can stand up. The dividers you can play around with. I would order one and then play around with it to see how you like it.. Doesn't look like much as wood is much more decorative, but it does the job very nicely.

mvk20

That sounds good. I'll grab one and see how it goes. I might ask for your ideas on configuration if I run into trouble, if you don't mind. In addition to all of the other pieces/pawns, do you usually have 6 separate compartments, one each for the two kings and four queens? Looks like you're only supposed to be able to get 15 compartments, so I was wondering how that all might work. I'm glad you can do one box per set though. I'm really interested in functionality rather than form for these - I've got a couple of nice boxes for the few sets I might be using at one time, and this would just make it easier for me to swap them in and out of those.

I can try to take a pic when I get a new cell phone, the one I have is currently out of order.  Have a different one coming via the net.

I have some Plano 3700s that I keep a couple of my sets in.  I use one box per half set.  Here's a photo of how I do it:

Yes if you line the bottom with thick foam you will have to use 2 boxes.  I ue no foam but do not transport the sets either so one box is fine for one set.

Here’s my first crack at it. Wiscmike, is this anything like what you do?

Yes very similar. They rattle around a bit but can accommodate a whole set in one box. I do not travel with them so I see no reason to put foam inside. Will have a phone with a camera on Thursday but that is what mine looks like too.

If you don’t mind snapping a pic when you get your phone I’d love to see it. Thanks for all of your advice - it’s been a huge help!

I can assure you, mine all see the light of day, just not all at the same time. And boxes like this will make it easier for me to swap from the one I’m using today to the one I’ll be enjoying tomorrow. It’s just like my favorite music - it can’t all get played at the same time, but each album has its day from time to time.

I have over 30 wood sets that I keep in this type of container.  It is easy to tell which set you have by looking through the near transparent material, so grabbing the set you want is easy.

And my sets see the light of day, just not all at once.

Last week I used my Noj GM Pavasovic set.  This week I used my favorite Noj Dubrovnik II Brown set.  Next week I am going to use ny HoS Fischer Spassky Commerative Ebonized set.  And then in the next few weeks I will use my lesser expensive sets for faster time control games.  All are stored in their own Plano box with padding.

It breaks my heart to see sets in boxes like this, rarely seeing the light of day. Sets should be on a board being played with.

Why do you assume they rarely see the light of day?  I only put them in the boxes when I travel with them.

I just bought one of the plano 3700s deep but its not laid out like yours (id love for it to be but) the slots for the dividers on yours look to be in more convenient spots, did you do any modding to get it like that? Im sure I got the same make and model as mentioned, but mine looks more like Mvk20's pictured box (notice the slots for the dividers).

PhillipTheTank

Yeah, I don't think I have the same ones they have.  Mine aren't nearly deep enough to fit pieces standing up.  Not even close.

There is a deeo version of the 3700 but it still doesnt have all the slots available as the one that you have...hmmm, I got mine at walmart (the deep version), Ill check if they have that one for the layout. The deep version allows pieces to stand (as long as theyre not the king and queens, unless its like a 2.5 set), and it way 7.03 after tax for me (in case thats what you are looking for).

Nah, I love the ones I have.  Putting the layer of foam in the bottom holds the pieces against the case lid when it closes so the pieces don't move very much at all.  It's pretty perfect for my needs.  If I didn't take them places as often, I would consider a different way of doing it, but I'm happy with what I have.

Where did you get that foam? The only kind I can find is green and in craft stores...and expensive.

PhillipTheTank

It's an old mattress topping foam sheet.
