Well done, @Powderdigit, that looks amazing! That pricetag, though. O_O

That box is great. I wouldn't mind trying one like that. Never seen that brand anywhere here, maybe I will check out Amazon.  I do not think that is overkill at all.

Update- I did find the brand name box on Amazon but it is priced a bit out of my range, but nonetheless it is a great box and gives you super protection.

Yes, I do like it but I realise that this is a Plano thread - so I won’t hijack the topic anymore. I might try and move to a general storage thread.

I think this is the perfect place for your post since it is similar storage to Plano.

It's the best I have seen yet the way you have it configured.

I can recommend (as an alternative of Plano box) Flambeau 5012 - waterproof, stackable and 7cm deep.

Feel free to post away in this thread. I don't mind. The original intent of the thread has run its course. Did you consider ganging up the pawns into shared compartments so the more delicate bishops and rooks have their own compartment?

For anyone interested, there is now a special edition "smoke" color Plano 3700 Stowaway with ProLatch. Currently only available as a 4-pack. Same exact mold specs as the regular frosted version. It comes out to $7.50usd each. I couldn't resist buying a few more. White pieces can go in the frosted version. Black pieces go in the smoke version.

I actually store my CB Sinquefield in one 3700 container.  There isn't much jostling on the 10' walk from the table to its place on the shelf.

Awesome. Your config looks solid! I'm not sure about the CB repro, but the HoS Sinquefield set has Queen crowns that are extremely sharp and pointy. In an abundance of caution to both protect the crown tips, as well as prevent scratching of other pieces I gave my Queens their own compartments. The Queens are literally the most dangerous piece! Hah!

FYI: for anyone interested in the above config, that's the Plano ProLatch version with 3 permanent rows

Ok, with the permission granted, I’ll follow up on this box. @pawnerai -  thanks for idea about ganging up the pawns. It made me think about all the positioning.

Further, and for no other reason than I can, I configured a ‘bullet proof’ option. No piece in this config touches and I have added some foam - just for the sake of it.

With this option and with my most valuable set (which isn’t valuable!) - I would have no issue carrying it anywhere… except under water ….

planes, trains and automobiles, so to speak. These pieces are snug and not going to mark, no matter the bumps that the case gets.

Please note: the foam is absolutely not needed / I just had it around and used to show the option. I mean, who’s going to go to that trouble for a regular use!

So what would such a box be used for?

Travel… but it’s heavy!

Efficient, flat and secure storage.

I thinks it’s overkill - maybe justified in some circumstances. I’m not taking it back and I might even buy one more but the cheap plastic boxes are surely better for most circumstances.

While expensive for a box, it’s a fair bit cheaper (and more flexible/more utility) than those custom leatherette, silk-lined boxes too. But of course, it’s not a display box!

Wow with the foam and that box configuration that is the best I have ever seen.

@Powderdigit  Woah. EXCELLENT reconfiguration and use of space. Nice pillows! Snug as a bug in a rug.

I am officially tragic - a chess tragic or just tragic - you choose. I won’t be offended.

Another configuration with taller pieces - the queens added complexity to this arrangement! Anyway - works well by two!

@Powderdigit Well done on your “blue” cases! Your space management solution is superior to the overpriced wooden offerings out there!I do have a “soft spot” for the Plano offerings as they are made a distance from where I live and whose tackle boxes were a mainstay of fishing trips growing up. Lately now I’ve been OCD-ing on storing my smaller sets in inexpensive cigar boxes. Great post and thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas!

As a polar opposite to my blue boxes above - here’s a $3 box found at a local opp shop over the weekend. Works well too.

Bought this at our DIY store for 21 euro. Nothing fancy, kinda cheap plastic cassette but it gets the job done. The dividers are adjustable.

Edit: forgot to tell every cassette has it's own slot so it's easy to take out any cassette in any position.

Love this thread. Plano fan here but these alternatives are wonderful too!
