Playing Vs a Computer

Hi all,

I am looking for recommendations to play chess in the computer, it can be online or I can download software (Linux preferred).

I am looking for a computer software with different levels so I can play a level that wins most of the times but still not to high from my level so I can feel challenged.

If there are option to analyze games, get feedback or any other educational tool that help me improve my game, that is even better.

What programs other users use, what they recommend?

Thanks.

I have Fritz and it allows you to control the strength of the engine/your opponent down to single digit ELO (e.g., you can play against 1800, 1801, 1802, etc.). Works well for me.

Note that with Fritz you can get older versions fairly cheaply

Another option is Shredder - you can use it free for 30 days to see if you like it https://www.shredderchess.com/

Shredder is quite good for being human like in its play.

Another really good (and completely free) option is Lucas Chess https://lucaschess.pythonanywhere.com/

If you are wanting self contained software that you can use online or offline on the popular operating systems (including Linux) then I would recommend Arena Chess. It comes with GUI and chess engines. It also has Analysis mode and you can import/export/save games. It is free to download.

Out of the box the chess engines are on the strong side but you can tweak most of the engines to suit your strength and playing style.
