When I was young my father and I used to play chess using a Napoleon plastic piece chess set.  He passed away a number of years ago and I don't know what happened to his Napoleon chess set.  Several years ago, I went to a yard sale and happened upon this same type of Napoleon chess set.  The pieces are exactly the same plastic with felt bottoms.  There is a slight difference in the dark piece color.   On my dad's set, the pieces were dark blueish gray, but the white pieces are the same color white.   I was thrilled and would have paid much more than the $10.00 they wanted for the set.  So many great memories.  I will never part with it.

Nostalgia is priceless. It is like that toy you once had as a kid only more. It represents the bond you shared with your dad. I'm glad you found a set that is so meaningful to you.

It’s interesting to see the Napoleonic set in plastic. I have the same figures on a slightly altered base from Italfama. I got my set in Germany in 1992, but it’s still available today.

Just had to let you know I won it! Was very frenzied at the end but just judged it right by the skin of my teeth!

I just received a very nice plastic set by German vendor Schach Niggemann. Apparently I got the last set of this color, they seem to be picked pretty bare now: Complete Sets (they also used to have green sets and pink sets).

I was slightly surprised because the white pieces didn't seem as blindingly white on the photo on the website, but that's okay.

Also, I am very impressed by the way things were shipped. Even though I only ordered plastic stuff and a few other cheap odds and ends, everything was carefully wrapped again in flexible cardboard(?). It felt as if someone had taken real care with my order.

Turns out I really don't like the blindingly white pieces, but I had noticed that Niggemann has the same pieces in different colors happy.png

So I bought a black and "ochre" set (and a b/w mousepad board), and I'll use the ochre ones with the red pieces. Original combination

Red and Ocre looks nice actually.

Agree about stark white but only had that option for my plastic set from UK.

Really want to get Philos 2044 chessmen that Sound recommended but cant find them in stock in UK.

Thanks I'll have a look but would rather order from UK.

They have them advertised on Amazon UK, but just out of stock at the moment.

I like the white pieces in your set, because they match the white squares on your board happy.png

In my red set, the white squares are kinda off-white, so the toothpaste-white pieces didn't match.

Thank you Daniela, I love my chess set even though it was cheap as chips 🙂

So was mine (both sets under 20€), but I can't wait until the pandemic is over and I can find out where open-air chess is played in my city so I can use the pieces happy.png

Interesting that they would use this cheap plastic set for a US Open in the Las Vegas scene. I like the set but when Benny complains about having to use cheap plastic sets in Cincinnati. However in Las Vegas, he doesn't say a word about the cheap plastic sets that they are having to use in the US Open.

Found in storage, my dad's Drueke Player's Choice. Think they're going to become my daily driver unless I give them directly to my kid (16-year-old). I played with my dad on occasion, but he never used these pieces. Not sure why.

HoS Marshall series Library size 2.8" Kings are great for study.  Lightly weighted as well.

Playing through games of the Soviet championships, so I pulled out this plastic set, the game on the board is from the first Soviet championship, Rabinovich - Alekhine.

That's my favorite (and honestly, only) chess set. My uncle had one just like this when he taught me how to play, but the white pieces were yellowed from use and the Black Queen's nose was missing. There was also a crack in the White Knight when he checkmated a little too enthusiastically.

His set is gone, but I managed to track down a used set on eBay for a reasonable enough price.

The Zeus series is one of those plastic sets that strike up a conversation. Had one player who thought that it was real stone at 1st. Another player who lays tiles for a living really likes this set because of it reminds him of stone tiles. Most don't like the green being as white but it is different and it is definitely not going to be accidently mixed up with someone else's set at club.

Bestchessset.com is where I got this set but it seems like they no longer have it. Glad I got it when I did.

So as I was perusing this forum last night I ran into this old thread. I have many wood sets and I do prefer the Staunton design for OTB play. This is the first serious tournament set I purchased back in 1980; hard to believe its been 40 years now. I still play with it occasionally, and I remember purchasing it via an ad in a magazine. I had to sent a check in and the entire process took about a month, from the time I put the check in the mail to the time I received the pieces in the mail. Took so long because I purchased it from a shop in England. The set itself was between 23 and 24 dollars and the shipping was under 10 dollars. It has its nicks and dings, but it is still one of my favorite, wood or plastic. I apologize for the images; took it with my phone.
