There is a lot of detail on that set The black squares have like a textured parquet look.

This is kind of a funny one.

It's multifunctional

It's a maple cutting board .

It's great for grilling you can cut up steak on it.

It's portable it has a handle.

And it hangs on the wall so it's Faux Chess Art!

This set has been my faithful travelling companion for years now.  I bought it at Strategy Games in Toronto.  It's an Indian made magnetic set but I'm not sure what company actually made it.  It's a small set but I've enjoyed playing over it in hotels, bars and cafes.

This is my newer travel set.  I splurged and bought a Chessmate set.  The strength of the magnets is impressive and the pieces are really well done.  The set also comes with cardboard discs on magnets for when you don't want to break out the pieces.  It lacks the sentimental attachment I have for the previous set I posted, but It's a very fine travel set that never fails to impress.

WOW! The piece color is gorgeous!

The board is easily playable.

The inner and outer case show quality!

That's pretty hard to beat.

Side note Old School bond

I myself use a Crown Royal pouch to hold pieces.

They had to have Chess players in mind

I agree with both your posts.  The pieces are superb and very well proportioned. Chessmate does a great job.

And, yes, the old Crown Royal bags are a great chess accessory.

Forgot I had this one buried in an old trunk it's kind of nice.

Very nice Chessmate set. I decided to pull the trigger on the Chessmate Deluxe. I've been recently longing for a nice portable set to have in my backpack to satisfy the random chess impulses away from home.

I've got an old set up at my parents' cottage that is similar to that set.  Very nice.

Good call.

The first set in this thread looks like a Filipino Staunton.

Here is my best travel set:

The board is beautiful as well! The squares seem to have a design in the center is that correct?

Thanks, you two. It's a pegged set. There are holes in the center of each square so the pieces stay put.

Actually this is a better design and my most used travel set:

The pieces are not so pretty, but the board snaps shut without disturtbing them so you can keep the game/position.

You might say the second set is my best, come to think of it, because it's the one I use. I posted the other first thinking in "collector mode" thinking it was something special, worth showing off. The first set is some 19th century English ivory pre-Staunton thing which is a collector's item. The second set is modern Indian and mass produced like almost all chess sets, not collectable, but very nice if what you need is a good travel set. I recommend this type of set.
