What chess variant is that?

Shogi is played on 9*9 but you can't play that with two different colors of pieces.

@ FBeyer

I will probably get flamed for saying this: I do not consider it to be a chess variant. It is called Final Wars and I am the game designer.

No big surprise, I was expecting you to comment.

You did not answer my question from another post.

I will repeat it.

Is Chess a Chess Variant?

"it is a strategic game played on a field of alternating squares"

variant - (n)a  form or version of something that differs in some respect from other forms of the same thing or from a standard.

So, no, chess is not a "chess variant" since a variant by definition is something that differs from a standard and chess is the standard that the other forms are compared to.

Is chess a "variant" of another game? Perhaps. But is is not a "chess variant".

How to make a thread be about your made-up chess variant instead of what the thread was originally about:

1) post in thread with picture of your chess variant which visually obvious differences from regular chess without mentioning that it's not chess so that people will be compelled to mention that things are different from chess

2) while replying to those mentions, make obviously false statement to troll

3) engage the people that bite on the troll condescendingly compelling them further to respond

4) ???

5) profit

I propose instead that people:

1) post their chess sets

2) profit

OP = Post your sets, so I did, that is my set.

Then a guy asked me a question, I answered the question.

Then a guy that has been rude to me in the past jumped on the thread.

Seems like nothing has changed on the forums.

The game has been made and there is no going back now.

It does not matter to me if it takes centuries. Tongue Out

My 3" Zagreb set. I have it setup on my desk and use it to study. Very nice feel, good size and looks great on my 15" Sapele and Maple board. Not heavily weighted but still feels good and the size is great for a study/library set.

But I do own this hella cool one from chessbazaar.com that I got on one of their eBay auctions:

Chess bazaar has some nice economy sets, I was surprized. I have the bridle knight set coming, I'm going to post a comparison between that and my HOS small zagreb set.

It will be interesting to compare the quality/price of the two different sets. They are both similar sized.

I don't know why the smaller sized ones aren't more popular, it's nice to be able to take in the entire board without getting up and standing on a ladder.

Looking forward to some pics of that comparison. Laughing

The problem with smaller sets is that they can feel too spaced and disproportionate on the average board. Also, they seem sorta cheap if not well weighted.

But I do get your point. My tall, unweighted pieces tip over constantly and it's a pain. Undecided

I got the smaller 1.7 inch board, which was kind of the point, takes up less real estate on my dining room table.

I have some nice top grade plywood boards I'm thinking of painting a board on. I might make a little table.

I also have a small cheap magnetic one that is even smaller, I think it's a 12 inch board. It's a nice set for replaying games while sitting in bed or on a recliner.

mcostan,

I have a small 3" fierce knight set that I use with my 1.75" chess boards, and I'd been looking for a slightly larger set to use with these boards for some time now.

I finally found this 3.5" Russian set from Chesshouse.com for only $69 that works perfectly. So what if 2/3 of the pieces looks like they have goiters!

Amiga500DK

I have this set. It feels really nice.

Pieces are made of boxwood and rosewood (sheesham). King height 83mm. Board is 50mm squares with notations. I forgot what the board is made of. Mahogany and maple IIRC.

1000 Danish kroner or about $160 or €130.

I won this set this summer during our annually chess tournament, it's apparently limited edition for a company over here in Holland:

I like simplistic sets. My main criteria is that the pieces are easily distinguishable. I wouldn't have noticed the goiters till you mentioned them. Laughing

I got my chess bizarre set! I'll post a comparison later on. I really like them. The knights have bulbous eyes but they are stocky and have bridles and are very distinct. I don't know why makers insist on bulbous eyes, I'm thinking to improve the view from the front.

The slot in the bishop goes through the ball on the top which is kind of disapointing. But when all is said and done it's kind of nice for a budget set.

I did have to do some cleaning waxing and polishing, I did that on my zagreb set. It makes all the differance in the world. They both arrived with dry spots from the carvings. I wipe some beeswax/mineral oil (boos board) stuff I use on cutting boards, and also renaissance wax on them and it gave a nice even luster to the pieces and took away the dry look. I should have taken before and after pics.

I'll bet if people put that stuff on their ebony sets they wouldn't crack as bad.

I am extremely pleased with my new House of Staunton Grandmaster Chess Board and Box combo for $169 USD (on sale with coupon) + shipping.  I also received outstanding service from HOS, and I do recommend them.  Everything arrived in carefully-packaged, clean housing.  This is the 4 inch set, and the board (which is veneered, I believe) has mahogany and maple 2.25" squares (tournament standard).  I had to wait many years before I could afford to spend this much money on a chess set, and it was worth the wait.  Here are some pictures:

Very nice set Nathan001. Looks great! The Rooks stand tall and the Knights hold their head up high.

mcostan

Here are some poor shots of my bridle knight economy CB set.

It looks better in person. The knights are sturdy draft warhorses. The pieces are easily distiguishable. I'll post side by side comparison with the small zagreb later.

I like the sheeham wood better than I thought I wood.

I sold my thornwood african set on ebay so I'm using the proceeds for a small wooden magnetic set to use while reading and stuff in bed or my chair.

Thank you, Rsava and informaticacobach29!  I've always wanted to buy a HOS set, but never had enough money before.  There were some sets that I wanted to buy (e.g. the Player's and the Collector's series), but these were far beyond my budget.  I decided to begin looking at their cheapest sets and go up from there until I found a set I could live with. As it happens, I can do better than just live with the Grandmaster set--I can really enjoy it!  And I think it is excellent value.  Here are a few more pics, showcasing more of the Black pieces (after the first image).  By the way, I just realized I got the set for less than $169 USD--I was able to use a coupon.

Nice set, Nathan0001. My eyes are drawn to those bishops. Mighty mitres.
