Here's my HOS Classic set in boxwood and rosewood sitting on a board that was inspired by their walnut, maple and "cherry" tiroir.  The frame is mahogany and genuine cherry, with cherry on the outside.  The sides and drawer faces are also cherry, and it stands on red oak legs, none of which is depicted here.

I used an assortment of vintage hand tools to plane and shape this project, and finished it with shellac, topped with several coats of paste wax.  Its surface is smooth, but irregular, sort of like antique float glass.

Wow, that's really nice. I can appreciate the work that went into it; I've tried my hand at precision joinery in the past and failed miserably :-)

I have nothing expensive (an unfortunate side-effect of having no money) but I did return to my childhood home recently to collect a set which my grandfather left behind when he passed away.

My mum says it was hand-made for him, and she remembers him bringing it home in the mid-seventies, probably '75 or '76.  A close inspection shows it was definitely hand-made as some of the grooves on the pieces are misaligned with each other and each one of the four knights have slightly different proportions to each other.

The collars on two of the pawns are chipped, and both kings have lost a part of their cross, but apart from that I think it's in very good condition.  And I love the way it looks.  Simple, but beautiful.

It was filthy when I recovered it as it must have been in the attic for at least 10 years, but I gave it a clean and a wax and here it is! (The board is hand-made too and all of the pieces fit into it when it folds up.)

Here it is:

And the chessmen...
I also found his old BHB clock.  Must be pretty old as it says "Made in West Germany" on the back.  To my surprise, it still works perfectly!  It lives in this cloth case:
And finally I came across this tiny little travel chess set.  It looks pretty ancient and I had completely forgotten about it until I stumbled across it!
That's it!  Sorry for the picture overload!

You certainly have a treasure there.  I've never seen such over-sized collars on pieces like that but they look great on that board.  And the rounded edges of the board seem unique as well.  NICE!

Currently there is an article on the front page about personal lessons by Yasser Seirawan. The article was interesting enough by itself but something caught my eye:

That chess board is sexy! I've been looking all over for a board with light colored squares to make the absolutely best contrast between the board and the pieces but I also want a board with very little border to it. The board in the image looks absolutely perfect in my eyes so I turn to you, dear members of chess.com: Where does one acquire such a board? Links? What's the wood? Do I need to hire a carpenter to make one for me? Is that style of board called something so I can search for similar boards?

Oh! And to stay on topic: an image of my board and pieces

Nice board. It looks like the squares are made of maple and cherry. But I'm sure there are other woods which also look similar. You'll probably have to make  custom board.  These are not exotic woods so I'm sure this board wouldn't be too expensive. Do a goggle search for makers.  Here's some pics of my maple and cherry custom made board wit 2.5" squares.

Is it just me or are these latter pages flooded with Zagreb and Dubrovnik sets? Is there currently a rennaisence for these designs or have they always been popular?

Or is it just cognitive bias since I own a Zagreb set myself and tend to see them everywhere now?

If possible, I'd be interested in seeing a better picture or the board. Looks good to me.
