The Marshall Series Analysis 2.875" (black/natural) and a 1990's, 2" square Drueke-
Post your sets!

BFischer1972, how did you set the board into the desk? I've thought about doing something like that, but only thought about it. Not even sure what's the best way to go about it, whether to paint one on or inlay it, or what. Any ideas appreciated.
Thx
i used a dark stain on the board for the rim and dark squares instead of paint so you can still see the grain. i left the white squares alone leaving them the color that the table originaly was and then used a light stain for the rest of the tabletop. Then i put a couple coats of polyurethane on the entire tabletop and then a few more coats of polyurethane on just the chess board.
Mine one.

Just a little. You have a 1.6" diameter king and normally a 1.5" would be ideal for a 2" board. HOS recommends a 2.25" board with your set, but the ideal size would probably be a 2.125". I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Well, hate to boast, but mine will be even prettier. Will post in a few months, when they are finished. ^-^
(lol I'm not usually cocky like this, but I'm in a sort of playful mood at the moment.)
I already know what they'll look like because my craftsman had shown me in email the sample models that he finished.

Haha was that in reference to me cockiness ^^, Kayak21? =D

My bad.

In another thread I posted a few examples of the pieces of a set my mom gave me, that she got in a thrift shop. I had been searching for information about it and finally found something!!! It's an african yaruba set made of thornwood. Here is the pic from chess museum.
Here is a poor shot of the one I have. I have all the pieces. I was thinking of putting it on ebay. There is one set on there now like it, it didn't sell for the origional asking price. I don't want to post mine when there is already a set posted.
A few days ago I ordered a set from HOS, the Zagreb '59 Series Chess Pieces - 2.875" King.
I have some inexpensive tournament sets and a couple of smaller magnetic sets (plastic). The tournaent ones are really huge, I wanted a smaller library sized set for study. I like my bishops to be distinctive so that design appeals to me. I got the rosewood and boxwood with mahogony and maple board, for contrast. I'm wondering if I should have gone with the darker board but I don't like my pieces to blend in with the board.
At any rate, the board can be upgraded later. I'm looking forward to setting it up in my parlor and playing through famous games.

I have no idea why that was deleted. I've posted that pic before. There is nothing about it that would upset anybody.

I got my zagreb set today!!!! I love. it! One of the deciding factors was the size, I wanted a smaller set for study. I also like a little contrast on my bishops. I was curious how the different woods would look together.
The rosewood is dark like chocolate and contrasts nicely with the dark squares. I was concerned that the dark squares on the board would be bright and reddish but in real life it's not.
I'll post pics tomorrow when I get to a real computer. The paragraphs I'm trying to make on my phone turns into a wall of text, that's bad enough. I am curious as to why they don't make more smaller library sized sets, it's so much easier to see the whole board and the patterns.

Here are some pics. The board looks much redder in the pics than it really is. The dark pieces are like chochlate.
I rubbed a little bit of my boos board beeswax and mineral oil on the pieces which gave more depth to places like the knights mane, top of the rook, places that were carved.
The pics don't reallly do it justice. The only "flaw" was the dark cross finale was a little loose. I put a couple layers of clear fingernail polish on it, then when dry rubbed some diatomacious earth on the stem (so it wouldn't bond to the piece) and it fits fine now.
I prefer my kings to be distinctive from the other pieces so I used the cross finale, it also comes with a peaked one.
The letters and numbers appear to be decals or painted on, but are flawless. I am assuming the squares and stuff are veneer due to the pricepoint but they look really nice.
It's my first "real" set aside from my thornwood african one, which isn't practical to play chess with. I'm going to sell it on ebay or something.

Just received these rather dashing HoS Dubrovnik chessmen in the mail today, and I have to say it is probably the most enjoyable set to play on that I've ever encountered.
(and yes, the Pirc, or, the Yugoslav Defense, was the intention)
Hi, I just received mine a week ago and have played a few games, it is definitely a great chess set for $199, I recommend it highly! I predict that HOS will sell more of these chess sets than any other. My only issue is the ebonized wood that will eventually wear off. Better would be to use Walnut or some other real dark wood
Thanks,
PC
The rosewood of my zagreb set is very dark, it looks black under the light over my table. You can see the brown in sun or up close under bright light. If you look close you can see a little grain.
I didn't think I would like really dark pieces but they aren't a monotone black. And I don't have to worry about a finish flaking off.
I did notice a litle while ago that my rooks don't match from the top. The middles vary in thickness a little. I'm not sure if I should be concerned about that, as it's not a very expensive set.
I really like how the color varies according to the light. I'm currently reading the book "logical chess move by move" and my eyes have not been fatigued staring at the board all day. The knights look better in real life than in the pics on the site.
