Post your Travel Chess Sets

At 24cm * 12 cm closed - with a 3cm king… I’ll call this a ‘travel set’ but it doesn’t have the practicality of magnets nor overly clear pieces. Let’s call it a “travelling curiosity” to go with the key ring above.

The travel chess sets are mostly in made in huge quantities and meant for masses. They donot have collector level quality . The knights look Ok in craftsmanship as the set is mostly for casual use.

Tweezers included?

A mini set. Looks cute but I don't see how it can be used for a game. We would need microscopes to play with it.

Anyways interesting acquisition.

@DeDElev67 On the Drueke with those fold-in side drawers? The source was my son. He lives in Phoenix where there is somewhat an older population and they have many estate sales. Was not cheap but fairly priced. It is a precision piece of woodworking too. It is my best one and it was in pristine condition which is amazing. Thanks.

I carry a mouse pad set with plastic pieces. Super portable. Can be easily folder. No bother if lost and handles well.

It should be this...

It is actually this one: grin

And not just travelling...

A friend who has a Drueke Little Jewel asked me about possibly making a leather case since his cardboard box is giving up the ghost. Since I've also got one of the same dimensions, also with a carboard box that has seen better days, I figured why not and knocked out this proto from some scrap during my lunch hour(-and-a-half), riffing on a deck box pattern I bought from FarfarsYxa on Etsy . I left out a few steps for time and ease, but even so, given how long the box is versus how deep, the dimensions are less conducive to this construction technique (cards are squarer so the rivets at the bottom are much easier to get to), so depending on what my friend says I may take another whack at it, box stitching instead of riveting. If I do give it another go and it works out, if there's any interest out there, I may try to sell them on Etsy.

Question: are there multiple models of the Little Jewel, possibly with slightly different dimensions? Anyone know? I noticed that @magictwanger has one with a clasp closure, which neither of ours has, so I figured it was worth asking. Thx.

magictwanger

Wish I knew the answer to that. I do remember seeing a few back when I bought mine, around 1981.Never saw one without the clasp, but there probably are some floating around.

It is a supremely well made little jewel of a travel set,as you know.....Nice job with that case, btw.

Classy.

Nice! This gives me some ideas wink.png

Bunky, is that a Peter Ganine set that someone carved out of stone? Never seen that before, very nice!

Way to spruce up the old set well done.
I did a quick temp finials with regular schmegular plastic thumb tacks...

@jouss_leather_tattoo, thanks, and I hope you share what you make! @magictwanger, thanks for the compliment! This is the magnetic closure on mine. Does yours have magnets as well as the clasp? And yeah, it's put together really well, especially given its age. And I love that when the hinges eventually go, the frame is wood and completely repairable.

magictwanger

I like your set quite a bit.....I bought mine in 1981,when I worked in lower Manhattan and got it in The Village Chess Shop...Greenwich Village (I believe Bobby Fisher used to play there).

Mine does not have magnets.Personally,I prefer yours and would bet it's a later version and improved by the magnets. Mine is still in as new condition and I even keep the pieces in the original small plastic bag, within the set. I also have the original box as well and mint too...Ha!

Btw,as you must know, these sets are extremely well made. One of the reasons I bought it.....for,if I remember correctly $8.00 Maybe $10.00

These are really "Little Jewels" as far as travel sets go....Just my biased opinion.wink

Hi guys, hope everyone is doing well. I recently got my second chess set and it just happens to be a very beautiful magnetic foldable travel chess set 10". Courtesy of Royal Chess Mall they sent me one to do a review on. If anyone is on the lookout for a travel chess set, I did a video review on my YouTube channel (itsiqbalgaming). This is my first chess set where both chessmen and board are made out of wood. Hope anyone can give the video a shot, as it is completely unbiased as it is not a paid review, nor did I sign/agree to anything with Royal Chess Mall for me to say anything specific. Meaning I was able to say everything and anything that came to my mind.
