Thanks Puffling...The king is only 3" tall but I'm starting to love these smaller sets. Just a phase, I suppose.
Post Your Chess Sets

Thanks Puffling...The king is only 3" tall but I'm starting to love these smaller sets. Just a phase, I suppose.
Well, you know how some sets you only want to look at and admire, some you want to play chess with. This little set of yours is definitely the latter for me.

@michaelcausey7 Yeah the original board looks crowded. The board itself is nice. It has a good vintage look to it. All of the photos re good including the last one.
Thanks...It's a cool little board, I just wish it was more playable and didn't have coordinates plastered on it. It has been re-purposed though. It's now serving as my everyday analysis board I keep by the computer with the glass eyed knight HUK set. Even the bases on them are too big for it but it's much more playable since they're more stable. I'll post it up soon in the every day chess set thread.

Thanks again...it's a great playing set for sure now that it has a little more room to breathe.

I'm pretty certain we all have our preferences about boards and sets. I prefer larger piece with the King at 4" or taller. I dislike any set with opposite color tops on their Bishops or other pieces. I prefer wood boards or black and white or green and white boards. I also prefer lower case letters on the perimeters and no brand name on any square.
Ok, as you were.

And a partridge in a pear tree 😁
You're very fussy Tieknight!

Are we doing this? Ok, let's do this...I like my chess boards to have borders and I HATE knights that look like mules. I love queens with spikey crowns and not rounded ones. I like bishops to have miters and not the Dubrovnik style, though I'm not as strict about that. I want crosses on my kings and imposing rooks. Yeah...that's about it.
Edit: I loathe modern art chess sets like the Berliner etc. They're just ghastly.
We all have our differing tastes...It's all good.
I like a variety of different looking sets, especially the Russian pieces.I like Classic Staunton, but it's so nice to have almost all(impossible) the bases covered.
When it comes to boards...Oh my Lord! Give me a spectacular platform board any day,as long as it's not going out to clubs...then portable is the way to go.
But PLATFORM BOARDS get me hot!

Has to be traditional Staunton style pieces or (very) mild variants thereof, in wood. Only one colour for each piece too, no white bits on the black pieces etc. I like some of the minimalist designs to look at, but I can't play with them. I spend too long finding/identifying non-standard pieces on the board and can't evaluate positions as efficiently as I can with Staunton gear (I'm not particularly efficient to start with - so any less efficient is a disaster for my game).
In short, Staunton-style pieces are like the letters of the alphabet for me, I've learned them over a lifetime and recognition is instant and automatic. Odd designs are more like Cyrillic writing in comparison - too slow to decipher.
So Staunton-only. After that it's just down to quality and looks - the best I can afford.

Do you not have any preferences Elena? I understand they may not reach the number I have

There is a saying, "To each their own."
I actually like the sunken type boards where there is a wood frame around the board that is a bit elevated. In a tournament or other rated game scenario, it is easier to put the pieces in the playing area and carry the whole thing to a different area with a lot less risk of things sliding off the board onto the floor.
My Chess piece preferences are also mixed. I do like the standard Staunton design, especially my HoS Craftsman Series set with the Camaratta Knights.
I also like the Noj/Dubrovnik designed pieces to play with.
I do not like the knights to look like dogs or mules or anything like that.

It's not technically my chess set, but I'll be playing on it in the near future, outside my daughter's dorm room.

First, you'll have to help them out by changing to the proper orientation: turn all the pieces 90 degrees...or turn the board 90 degrees.
Please! I never meant to imply that one should adhere to my own tastes "Eyechess".
I have more than only platform boards in house.....I just like 'em a lot!
Anyone preferring something else is fine by me....Please don't exaggerate the intent of my statements....You did that a few years ago, while you defended the many complaints surrounding C.B.'s quality...subsequently walking those back as of late.

I am sorry. I did not mean to wrongly interpret what you wrote at all.
I own a couple of platform boards also and I like them as well.
I just said i liked the sunken boards for tournament or rated play because of the ease of carrying the whole setup.
I understand that others like what they like and that may not be what I like, and that's fine.
Such a charming set, I love the knights and the pawns in particular
