This isn't exactly a chess set, but on Saturday I visited a craft fair where people could make pens on very tiny lathes.

Mins somehow ended up with a pawn at the top:-D

And now I'm wondering whether I want one of those mini-lathes for Christmas, for turning my own chess pieces :-D

Knights with attitude

Another not-really-needed chess set arrived today. It was sold as open/new on Ebay by a private seller (unwanted gift). I made an offer and accepted the extremely reasonable counter offer.

So now I own a "Staunton King Arthur" chess set made by Chess'n'Crafts. It's double weighted and made in genuine ebony and boxwood. They're gorgeous woods, even tone and grain with no flaws at all! The king is 4-1/2 inches tall with a 1-7/8" base (115mm x 47mm).

As usual, it was the knights wot made me do it and the price made it twice as easy. I generally don't like knights with drilled holes in the eyes, but these managed to be extremely expressive holes, somehow. Check out this bad boy...

Wot u lookin' at?
C'mere an' say that!
Fiiiight!

Oh, and there were other pieces in the set too. Here's a couple of snaps for context.

I've read many complaints of sets like this not looking like the pictures when they arrive, or bits missing, or damage, etc, and I avoided buying from these vendors as a result. But in this case, I could view images of the actual pieces I was buying - so most of the risks were removed.

A happy outcome.

Happy would seem like an understatement, regarding that absolute gem!

Ecstatic seems more appropriate.Enjoy that beauty.happy

I am extremely pleased with the result. The finish isn't quite up to the standard of the top tier sets as close inspection revealed minor sanding marks on a few ebony pieces. But no complaints here as you have to look hard for these marks (they don't show in normal use) and the set "only" cost £165 anyway, which seems a bargain to me. Don't tell me if it isn't though - ignorance is bliss! happy.png

Very nice! Can the chess board be removed from the table as well?

I myslef bought a "King Arthur" set just recently from antiquechesscrafts, same basic design, but with padauk pieces for black - which I prefer to ebony. Very happy with that one myself:

Magnificent! That combination of table, pieces and clock makes me want to pour a single malt and light a cigar (and yet I don’t smoke!!) … and most importantly, sit and play chess!

Perhaps not the best … but this is sitting on the table in front of me now and it’s one of my favourites.
The morning winter sun streaming through the window onto my back feels pretty good too!!

Just looking at the magnicent set up again at Post 2644 and noticed there is a chess trophy on the table as well. Is that part of the table history?

Thank you for appreciating.

I am not a chess collector but I am the person who fulfils the demands of chess collectors. The Chess Empire is my co. I have made several chess tables like this .

That is a very nice set. Twice, in the past couple of years, I've set out to buy a decent plastic set like this and intended to get something smaller than my best wood sets (largest has a 5.5" king) for casual OTB games away from home. Both times I was tempted by a second hand hardwood set instead (at greater expense, of course).

I don't think I'll get a plastic set now as I have enough second-best wooden ones to choose from for grab-n-go sessions. But if I do, it will be one like yours. Elegant proportions and classic style are always attractive, whatever the materials used. Congrats on yours!
