This is my set. Not sure how it compares to some of the others. But I like it.

What's not to like? Enjoy playing with it.happy

@Kylearan I see the board is a new thin rubber one that has the row numbers going horizontally. Very nice pieces also.

Nice set. I like those mouse pad boards in natural grains. I have two.

Nice pieces. I Like the cool looking knights. Where did you buy this set from?

Is it plastic in shape of wood.

I have a green mousepad which I mostly pair with my staunton chessmen.

Assuming you're asking me? (always quote to be sure).

Got it from Chess Palace (in Garden Grove, California), but got it when it first came out, around 2007 or so. Paid $400 then. Now it's a lot more expensive.

I received the Commemorative Signature Series Staunton Chessmen (distressed mahogany stained boxwood) from Staunton Castle and the Jaques style board in padauk and maple from SakisTsiogkasWood in my graduation gift from all my family. This is my first chess set, which is not just a 10$ chess set from the local toy store.

To me, this set is so beautiful, and it is certainly something I plan on playing with for the rest of my life.

The pieces aren´t too shabby either.

@Borregaard95 You said this was a gift so I don't know who chose that combination of pieces and board...But someone gave it some thought and it really works well! That rustic/antique effect looks great, and I really like that shade of mahogany color on the dark pieces. To me, Jaques style board fits that vintage style pieces perfectly, and gives an almost 'arena' feel. I have to say, that's one helluva nice gift and first legit chess set. Congrats!

While I love these pieces I get that staining ain’t some folks preference; DKW … the only time I remember you commenting positively on a stained set was my green Chavets … but perhaps I am mistaken that you thought they were ok.

How tall is the King?

this is my first chess set. I buy from a seller in Viet Nam, he said it's made in india. I don't know about the materials either, but I love it. Buying a wooden set in Viet Nam is very hard, that's why this set is very special to me

@Slytherin187 Your set is made from boxwood for the light pieces and Indian rosewood for the dark pieces. Those dark pieces are not stained but are the natural color of the wood. The Zagreb style is pretty unique and a lot of people like that style of knight. That was a good buy.

hermanjohnell

Staining wood is somewhat of an art. It takes skill, so, obviously, there are badly as well as excellently stained pieces. As there are unstained pieces of lesser grades of wood. But, I know, you just don´t get this...

(But, contrary to what I´ve said, I still hold a modicum of hope.)

hermanjohnell

You are a competent photographer.

@Slytherin187 Don't bother with that other guy. Your dark pieces are not stained but are really Indian rosewood. By his own picture it shows the unfinished top of the rook as being dark (not light like boxwood). But the real give away is the wood grain, the spotty grain of Indian rose wood. Boxwood doesn't have that type of grain.

Slytherin187

thank you for your comments guys, I love this chess set no matter what it's made tongue
May I ask a question about my rook design. What's the name of this design, I think it looks like Spassky but not being cut deep enough
