I purchased this Baku reproduction during House of Staunton's Black Friday sale. I've been looking for rosewood pieces to try on my black and white HoS clearance board. Indian rosewood was only a small surcharge relative to "blood rosewood". I had been trying to decide between the HoS reproductions based on sets from Chuck Grau's collection. Despite reassurances about the tall Ukrainian pieces, I opted for the more traditionally proportioned Baku. I already have the tall Odessa set. Unfortunately, the Bronstein set was only available in ebony.

Gorgeous set! I actually think the Baku reproduction looks best in Indian rosewood. I have it wishlisted to get at some point. I only wish the set was a bit heavier. But alas. The originals are unweighted I believe.

The Bronstein set is also really beautiful. I’m actually bidding on an original Bronstein set right now, although with an unconventional spike finial. It’s a cheap little set. The reproduction looks so nicely polished compared to the originals. And I think it actually looks best in ebony! But yeah, Indian rosewood goes incredibly well with your chess board. Beautiful!

Beautiful set. My experience is that this set is nicer in person than it may appear in photos. Everything, including the weight and feel of the pieces, is very enjoyable. I’m sure you’ll find this set in use often!

Thanks @WandelKoningin and @baudouin27.

I really like curviness of the Bronstein. It's still on my wish list for when I'm willing to pay the premium for ebony. Good luck with your bidding, and post photos when you get it.

I. Am. Hopeless. Just ordered two mor sets of (plastic) chessmen. Why?

Why not? Can you show us the sets on the site where you ordered them?

baudouin27

Nice sets though…

There should be an ‘I.Am.Hopeless’ community thread here (for the many of us living in this ‘great beyond’ [hope] place).

I guess there are worse addictions... Now I have received the pieces (I ordered from Le Due Torri, an italian outfit I´ve bought from before) and can honestly say that their pictures doesn´t do them justice. These are very nice, high quality, plastic pieces. Kings are 97 mm, the pieces are perfectly weighted and I like the Zagreb design. One set is black and ivory, the other in wood imitation.

I would like a plastic Mordovian set, possibly black and dark red, but it doesn't seem to exist.

Indeed it doesn’t. NextEraPrints does offer a 3D-printed set inspired by the Obedovskie pieces (a later version of a Mordovian analog set) used in the final game of The Queen’s Gambit. But it just doesn’t have the same appeal to me as either the early Mordovian set or the later Obedovskie.

But today I saw that they offer some pretty impressive coffee house and Dubrovnik repros. You could contact them and perhaps request an authentic repro of the early Mordovian set. I’m actually surprised they haven’t made one yet, as I imagine the demand is there.

CatOnChessboard

Well, I'd like a 3D-printed set like this:

But with this King's finial:

I am afraid it is not so easy to reproduce.

I can’t image it’s hard to to make a 3D model of—certainly not the king. The greatest difficulty would be getting the knight right. If they have access to an original set, I imagine they could do a 3D scan.

I would ask them if they can reproduce the set.

Yes, but I am also a little sceptical about the accuracy of the reproduction of the other pieces.

Apparently a set does exist! At least a model is available somewhere. Someone shared their 3D-printed resin Mordovian set on Facebook just now. It does look like a later version from the '70s or '80s.

Close ups of my new pieces (and I noticed that my new cellphone is not good for that kind of pictures but I have no battery in my proper camera. Also the different colors of the ivory pieces are due to the camera, the pieces are all of the same color. The pics of the knights and bishops show the true colors.))

As you said, the knight is not easy to make. But overall it is the best set I have seen so far.

hermanjohnell

My oldest set. Bought some time in the early seventies.

hermanjohnell

And here are the pieces. They came in an unmarked wooden box so I don´t know where they are made but would guess in DDR (East Germany).

Pretty mean-looking knight!

The files are available to buy on my website for anyone who'd like to print their own.

Here's my personal set:

I just joined to share a "thank you" for the wealth of information here that helped me find a family for our marble board. The board is 50+ years old and the unique set we procured is about the same. Perfect!

Thanks

Ok, I suddenly realize I am not sure how I get a photo uploaded but if someone can provide guidance I will. It's a continental set paired with a pink and black marble board.
