A high quality 3D printed set would be interesting,

You just need an ornamental lathe for that. It could be done automatically on a rose engine lathe which is quite old but for such a simple pattern I imagine there are many other ways.
Ah...Hope springs eternal.

I think I am going to have to have that Knubble set! It's really so attractive, while being diminutive and very affordable.... C.B. is sold out right now,but no rush.
Any recommendations whether to go for the crimson vs black?
Go for a Crimson one. It's back in stock. It give an awesome contract with black chessboard.
You will definitely love it.

As promised to Michaelcausey7, pics of the beautiful 27 year old hand made italian chessset i purchased in florence.

Now we're talking! Thanks Vinchenzzo. That board is amazing...Beautiful pieces as well. Nice scale armor on the silver ones.

Next i will be sharing a video of my pride and joy. A fully working 1983 MB PHANTOM CHESS COMPUTER UK VERSION. EXTREMELY RARE , especially when its works just as good as it did on christmas day 1983 when i opened this as an xmas present from my mum, 37 years ago. Check this out, retrogames are selling one. http://m.retrogames.co.uk/ingenii.cgi

As you can see from the pic, the red power light is on in the corner. Video will follow in next few days. This is a wonder of a machine, remember this was sold before mobile phones existed, it was in the era of dungeons and dragons, tape based walkmans, garbage patch kids! Lol

Thats there advertised price! Not saying mines worth that by any means and ive decided not to sell as its literally almost impossible to buy a working uk phantom chess computer anywhere. There one is American version too which sold a lot more units than uk so not as rare

To be totally honest, i know my mum was paying this off weekly all year in a games shop in nantwich and i think it was around 400 back then but i may be wrong ....

That's a nice set and a beautiful board. I was struck by how the pieces look like more detailed carvings of the Conqueror set by Ganine. The image is linked from boardgamegeek.com

Got this of a auction website which has exact same set....
Crescent - Set No' 18 - Medieval Chess Set, 1973, comprising: a complete 32 piece Chess set in black & ivory coloured plastic. The playing pieces are depicted as Medieval Characters & have felt pads fixed to the bases. A "The Crescent Toy Co. Ltd." Query Slip dated, 26. 3. 73 is affixed to the underside of the lid. Mint, contained in a generally Excellent [some minor age wear] pebble effect gilt titled set box. Scarce in this condition. The first such example to be sold by Vectis

My criticism of figurine sets is that your opponent's pieces, as seen from the front, look way cooler than your pieces as viewed from the rear (non-descript). I had a medieval set as a kid where the bishops and knights were nearly indistinguishable from the back (lost more than a few games as a result).
