This set is from "Staunton Castle".

It is a big, but still very elegant looking set.

The workmanship is stunningly good, the figures fit very well in the hand.

The clarity of the game is excellent, I am very satisfied with this set and can only recommend it.

The board is from Chess Bazaar and looks good at first sight. I have had better experiences with the relatively cheap boards from RPF.

One of my favorite sets! Love it

I absolutely love that beautiful board! Thanks for sharing that with us! I will make sure to check out that link happy.png

@Aida_Amin

The board looks great, but I can`t recommend it. It was expensive and after a few weeks I detect the first cracks in the wood frustrated.png

I won't name the supplier here, but a friend of mine also bought a similar board in India and had the same problem. The response and support from the vendor was disappointing, so I only buy RPF boards.

Here now the counterpart to the handy Morphy figures, which I presented in one of the earlier postings.

This is a thick, heavy set of figures (massivly weighted), which can only be used with a board with a field size of 60 mm or larger. On smaller boards the pieces look too clumsy.

Again it is the classic Staunton design, I like that. I like to play master games on beautiful chess boards for relaxation, there must be variety.wink.png

It is about this set from Chess Bazaar: https://www.chessbazaar.de/reproduzierte-1849-staunton-klassischen-schachfiguren-aus-ebenholz-und-buchsbaumholz-version-2-0.html

For the illustration I used two boards. Both are from RPF, have a 60 mm field size, are cheap and well made. There are no defects whatsoever.

One in walnut/maple with diagonal board edge, the other in Montgoy rosewood.

The chessmen are a bit older, I bought them used including the noble packaging.

Excellent condition, triple weighted. Black figures made of ebony.

Unfortunately the base was covered with imitation leather, which had to be removed and the pieces had to be felted again. I noticed that massive lead weights were added to the base with a lot of effort. These figures are extremely heavy, so they could be used as projectiles as wellnervous.png

The white figures have a beautiful wood structure, this is a wonderful set.

The board used is a Bohemia chessboard with a field size of 58 mm from the early 80s. I bought it in 1983. Maple and mahogany, the bottom is completely covered with felt.

Chessmen made of boxwood and rosewood. King height 95 mm, double weighted and with a beautiful design.

The chessboard is from RPF. Field size 57 mm with fields of walnut and maple.

Gee whiz where can I get one of those?

StauntonCollector

Here is another set of figures made by "Staunton Castle".

It is this set: https://stauntoncastle.com/products/verona-series-4-staunton-chess-pieces-ebonised-wood

A beautiful piece set!

These figures fit perfectly on a board with 55 mm field size. They fit very well in the hand, are clearly arranged and I love the design. I also have this set of figures in the rosewood version. Normally I prefer black color, for this set - which is presented separately - I make an exception.

The board is from the German manufacturer "Ulbrich Spieldesign". I have two boards from this manufacturer which are very solid handcrafted, but I also have two boards with defects. The board shown here has some defects regarding the workmanship.

The light fields of this board are made of maple, the dark fields of root wood. Unfortunately the edges are not glued cleanly, which is annoying at this high price.

Now a figure set from the category very inexpensive but still good.

Bought from Royal Chess Mal.

These figures fit perfectly on a board with 55 mm field size. They fit very well in the hand despite low weighting, are clearly arranged and I love the layered design.

The board is from RPF. The light fields of this board are made of maple, the dark fields of teak.

With a black figure set it is very comfortable to play. The board is available at Schach Niggemann for a ridiculous 60 EUR!

@StauntonCollector Nice collection! I really like the 1849 set you have from ChessBazaar. I ordered the same set and it will be here on Friday. I can't wait!

I love them and I hope that you are satisfied with this noble piece set!

Here now my second "Verona figure set" from Staunton Castle. This time in rosewood.

https://stauntoncastle.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/verona-series-4-premium-staunton-golden-rose-wood-chessmen

The pieces look great on the green RPF board with 55 mm field size.

I can recommend the combination all around.

In general, my experience is that the workmanship at Staunton Castle is very high quality.

Depending on the price, I am quite critical with the equipment and never had anything to complain about with all the figure sets from this manufacturer!

@StauntonCollector Me too! I really like the thick stems/waist of the 1849 set. My HoS Collectors is like that and I love that set.

Hello,

You have excellent taste! What kind of board did you choose for the pieces?

Best wishes from Germany!

I also like the cooke sets with the thin stems/waist and pancake bases like the 3.5" Morphy from Staunton Castle and 3.5" Cooke set from Official Staunton. Here is the Morphy set:

Here is the one I have on order with Official Staunton.

Now the definitive shock posting for all Dubrovnik lovers. wink.png Some time ago I bought the cheapest Dubrovnik boxwood set I could find.

My choice fell on the following offer from Royal Chess Mal.

link: https://www.royalchessmall.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/1950-reproduced-bobby-fischer-3-7-dubrovnik-chess-pieces-set-ebonised-boxwood

I am highly satisfied with the set both from the design and the workmanship!

StauntonCollector

Again some variety for the figure collection? The wife grumbles and it must not cost much this time?

In this situation often a look at the website of Royal Chess Mal can help.

Hello chess lovers,

after I have passively read along in this forum for a longer time and especially marvel at the beautiful chess sets, I would like to show some of my sets here and in the next posts.

I am from Germany and have been playing passionately for over 50 years. During this time I have accumulated a lot of books and sets

I am especially grateful to the forum for the suggestions and to the various manufacturers of noble but nevertheless affordable chess pieces.

Here my Chess pieces from East Germany (late 50s). Heavily weighted, King size 9,2 cm.

Hi! Are the 1950's East German sets still easily available? If so, how much do they usually sell for in good condition?
