Post Your Chess Sets

Brynmr,

Okay, the boycott is off! I feel free shipping via snail mail is appropriate for replacing a defective piece(s). After all, it's not as if you're missing a piece and you can still use the set until the replacement arrives. However, if a piece was missing and you couldn't use the set, then I feel they should ship the replacement via DHL. Welcome to the forum, Brynmr, we got your back!

Brynmr,

I have the CB version of this set sold as the "Austrian Coffee House" set. It's currently available from CB for only $99 (+$29 for lacquer, which I don't think it needs). The set plays well, pieces are very stable and the set is nicely weighted at 43 oz. (see complete spec in the table below). I like the pagoda-like structure of the kings and queens. It gives the set a touch of oriental flavor.

And finally, here's the Dimension Table for what I call my "Vienna Coffeehouse Set." In honor of the fact that Vienna was one of the major chess hubs of Europe.

Based on my sizing calculations (see link below), the set is ideally scaled to fit a standard 2.25" chessboard. Unlike many sets where the pawns are undersized, IMHO.

I agree completely.

Very nice! I just think this design (and it's variations) is so appealing. Funny how some of these designs really grab our attention. I'm not ready to buy another set as yet but this one or the one from the Chess Store is going on my wish list.

Huge improvement!  I always wondered why they continued to make that ridiculous knight with the giant unicorn spike on its head.  It looks like a set I would consider buying now, although I think Staunton Castle makes a prettier and more authentic looking version, for more money.

My preference would be the Sheesham version as it looks closer to the original 1950 set, and its even cheaper than the ebonized or the rosewood versions.

Couple of things....First off,I'm glad you are getting the replacements at no charge.I kinda' figured that C.B. would be making a bad business decision if they charged you.I never said I was going to boycott C.B. on a permanent basis, but if they decide to charge shipping for defective pieces,it would simply be bad consumerism,on my part,to gat anymore sets from them.....Taken as the law of averages,I have purchased 12 sets from them and 5 came in with cracked pieces.

I almost always expect to have an issue from them, based on my past experiences, though "all" were cleared up and I ultimately got perfect replacements(a hassle though,no matter how you rationalize it)....I'd still buy from them, but if they were charging for replacements,I'd certainly not want to figure the cost into a new purchase....Good move C.B. to keep us happy and not charge!!

The board is really nice and the misalignments are no biggie,imo.....Be happy that you have such a nice chess product ....You deserve it,I'm sure.

Btw,if you guys like the The Vienna Coffee House set, take a look at the one offered by The Chess Empire.....Not cheap, but really,"really" nice!

Anyone have the Vienna Coffee House Antique Reproduction set from The Chess Store? I'm wondering about it's weight and quality. I'm generally not attracted to gloss but this looks awesome in a quirky kind of way.

The Acorn Bishops are the earlier versions of the Vienna Coffeehouse set.

The Bee Hive Bishops are the later versions of the Vienna Coffeehouse set.

Me personally like the Bee Hive Bishops over the Acorn Bishops.

Actually, sorry,I meant Staunton Castle's set......There are some really nice ones on ETSY as well, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the other choices shown on this thread.

Here are the Vienna/Austrian Coffee House sets from The Chess Store, Chess Empire and Staunton Castle respectively. I'm partial to the acorn heads. happy.png

Hi Necro, the 2016 Bridle Knight combo that I ordered arrived in Australia - 8 days after I placed the order (i.e - 6 working days). I was pleasantly surprised with the speed given the state that I reside is still in partial COVID lockdown .... and had only just relaxed one of the globe's hardest lockdowns. Given the circumstances, I was stoked with that speed - and it was pretty nice way to end lockdown.

That's cool. If I was to choose between The Chess Store's version and The Chess Empire's version. I would choose The Chess Empire's version. A friend of my has that set which he got from HoS. You will notice that the version at HoS is the same as The Chess Empire's. However if I had the cash. I would get the Staunton Castle's Old Vienna Coffeehouse over either one of the others.

I don't imagine anyone has this luxury set from Chess Empire but if I had the money.... wow happy.png https://www.thechessempire.com/golden-signature-series-chess-pieces-boxwood-stripped-ebony-4-4-king.html

That Egyptian set is different and kinda cool. It would be a display set for me.
