Yes, in the past Jaques produced about four sizes.

3" Library

3.5" Standard

4" Small Club

4.4" Large Club

There were some others, including a couple types of travel sets, but this is generally considered the traditional sizes.

Same S**t, different day. Opens an account, posts his sets same day, havn't played a single game, only posts Chessbazaar links. Commercial disguised spamming.

Yeah, those Austrian pieces look a bit like the turner lost the plot.  The coffeehouse sets are supposed to be prized for their playability and durability.

how can i get value of my set (more pic and info in equip forum)

I first learned how to play chess when I was 5 on a set my grandfather used to own. It had red and green asian-style figures in a folding board and was the first chess set I'd ever experienced. It was interesting in that pawns on each side where unique to each other. One part that stood out for me was the chip on the red King's finger that made it look like his flesh was scraped off and the bone was exposed. This was 25 years ago. When my grandfather died, most of his stuff was sold at auction and I haven't seen the set since.

Fast forward to 3 days ago and this is what I found at another auction. Through family businesses I've been working in the auction industry for 20 years and it's a common expression that "You don't buy at an auction, you only rent it". The reason being that almost everything bought at an auction will eventually find it's way back. This still has the sticker on it from the first time it was sold:

Here it is during the auction viewing

I am now the proud owner of my grandfather's old set and I couldn't be happier. Chess has been a huge part of my life and this is what started it all for me.

Eight Immortals, Chinese set. This was the first set that I bought upon arriving in the US. I still have it : )

the Squares are 8x9, not 8x8.  Just the way the rings lay had to add an extra row so they'd be square.

That, and the copper squares have twice the number of rings.  The copper being softer I had to double them up for strength, instead of using '4 in 1' where each ring goes through 4 others, it's more like '8 in 2'.

so either 8x9x96=6912 (96, accounting for halve the squares, the copper ones, having twice as many rings)...

or

steel squares being 8x9x32= 2304
copper squares being 16x9x32=4608

2304 + 4608 = 6912

Thanks. It was pretty staggering odds that I'd have ever seen it again so I'm glad I didn't let it slip through my fingers. Also to strngdrvnthng, I didn't know the name so that's handy. How do you like yours? The pieces have a good weight and design to them so is a nice set outside of my sentimental value :P

strngdrvnthng

I love them for display, but they are awkward for playing. A friend used to always leave a Bishop hanging because he kept thinking it was a pawn : ) Eventually had to settle for Staunton design to stop his complaining : )

I'm not a chess set. Why has the thread title not been gramatically corrected yet?

Jolal

1959 plastic figurine set, called "Renaissance Chessmen". $2.00 from some grandma's attic at a yard sale last year.

Maybe we should start a new thread, like post your pics of chess sets you've MADE, or chess boards, tables, that you've BUILT. This is a $7.00 table from a thrift store, I spent about $60 over 6 weeks laying all this out by hand, and it is a really nice, heavily used table in my tiny living room.
