Release the Scoobies!

Minuskel

If you wanna go wild, dye your hair blue ... like I did.

Minuskel

Now I have gained momentum:

Do you wanna know, what I don't like on bishops? When they have a cut in their head, which looks like someone have treated them with a chainsaw. I'm not talking about the well crafted cuts with round edges. I'm talking about a mere cut, which looks like, they are coming straight from a brain amputation.

Minuskel

Guys ... don't take me too serious. I'm just joking around.

Minuskel

Btw. my bishops on my travell sets have all those cuts.

@GambitHawk Beautiful sets. Can you tell us where they are from and their names?

I saw the Scoobies putting up big eyes and ran away.

Speaking of the Scoobies, what's the largest size of that set? I only found around 7cm...do they exist in over 9cm?

Read a few bad comments on here about chess baron but took the leap and ordered these  /Triple Weight Margaret Anne 3.5 inch Acacia / I only have nice things to say about the pieces

Did someone call upon The Scooby?

My set (LINK)  has a 3.5" (9cm) King. There are plenty of other variations of these "dog knights". I just found this particular variant made by K&C Quality London Chessmen (1930s) to have the most pleasant dog knight form with the wide open bewildered eyes.

Here's a mammoth 4.4" (11cm) King set with dog knights. It's the mother of all Scoobies (1920s). Hah. With a big price tag to match. $350. It's too bad the King/Queen pieces have a noticable lean to them, or else I would've purchased the set  sad.png

The first set (wild, hippie, socially forbidden Knight)  is named Strachan Series from Staunton Castle. Other places like The Chess Empire and The Chess Store name it the Wellington Series.

The second set, probably my favorite Staunton design, is the Imperial Series (which inspired the 2014 Sinquefield Cup set; slightly different) from ChessBazaar.

I really like both sets. I love the elegant circle cutouts just above the base in the Strachan Series, especially on the pawns and rooks. The wood is breathtaking in the Imperial Series.

Ladies and Gentlemen, chess is a tidy, reputable and orderly game. In the light of this fact, it is not tolerable, that ho ... ehm ... Knights look like hippies on a strict divided board with neat squares.

That indicates the doom of civilisation.

I recommend Knights with a trimmed hair, or at least ... when they have long hair ... braides.

Braides with bows look even more appropriate.

You see, chess can be orderly, but by nature it is not. It is violent. The civilization can be doomed. The Knights don't care. They're ready to fight and rebel against society norms. I approve of their motivation.

In the other token, I do too enjoy the self-composed, authoritarian lavish braided Knights from my other set. They're delightful to look at.

That wild and dangerous Knight, what a joy it must be to put it in your enemies territory where he creates havoc!

@GambitHawk

Nice :-) Well said. I agree with you :-)

Minuskel

@sound67

nice rook btw. (the one without the crack).

I guess you are a professional musician, when you have more than 1 violin ... or is it a viola?

Another possibility is: your are a instrument maker.

TheOneCalledMichael

you miss option 3, violin seller lol

Minuskel

@Nghtstalker , this one is for you :-)

Minuskel

This one looks also savage. I like this one. Could someone make this out of wood?

Minuskel

But what is even more frightening than a savage looking knight are this news, I found today on chess.com: Queensgambit, the musical? It looks like the popular Netflix series The Queen's Gambit will be turned into a musical. The production company Level Forward has won the rights to adapt Walter Tevis's 1983 novel for the stage. ....

@Minuskel - I import and sell string instruments, I don't make or play'em. I know enough professional musicians who play them for me.

Strangely, I've never had a crack in any chinrest, peg or tailpiece on an instrument (usually ebony) in 17 years, and they're no more massive than chess pieces. Must be the weighting then.

I read somewhere, or was it coming from you Sound?, that violin makers refuse to work with wood younger then 10 years old? That could very well explain why you don't see cracks on violins.

Minuskel

Don't get me wrong, I loved "the queens gambit", but as a musical?

If a docu about the sexual behaviour of mealworms became a hit, they would turn it also in a musical.
