Something old. Something new. Something borrowed. And... nothing blue.
Old 1940s chess set (3.5" kings). New birdseye maple board (2" sq). And borrowed Anri Universum "Satellites" for pawn promotion stand-ins. No, I have not yet had the chance to use either of them as such in a game. BUT they are at the ready if the time ever comes
Very nice. It's good to see non standard designs.Love it.
Is it non-standard, or a very old standard?
I think the Staunton design was the first standardised pattern in 1849.
That raises an interesting question about standardisation. Seeing so many Staunton variations everywhere, is Staunton really a pattern which is more standardised than other patterns? And why is everyone assuming it was the first standardised pattern? What about St. George, Northern Upright, French Régence etc.? And what exactly qualifies as Staunton pattern, based on which criteria?
